Weirdest stuff you've read online recently

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine was on Mark Reads (I know, I know, I learned my lesson), where someone was wondering if Harry and Dumbledore calling Voldemort "Tom" was problematic, because "Voldemort" was his chosen name, and calling people by their birth name instead of their chosen name is "something transphobes do". So much what.

What's the weirdest thing you've read recently?

I almost wonder if that person was a troll pretending to be a SJW?

Yep.

That's pretty much what I always assume when I see stuff like that.

I think it "works" because a lot of people are just waiting to see an SJW do something egregious, so that they can go off an an exasperated, yelling rant at whoever happens to be around.

(possibly one reason I tend to go with "troll." I hate being the "audience" for exasperated yelling rants, even if they aren't about me)

Given that actual SJWs have mistaken a blackfaced painting of Mozart for the "real" version of the painting (instead of getting mad at a concert hall using blackface in their advertising) I generally tend to assume it's either/or -- could be a troll, sure, but equally likely it's just some dumbass.

If it wasn't on Mark Reads, maybe? But Mark Reads is a very special place, so...

Full context:

Person A: "And now I'm starting to wonder whether it's actually problematic for Dumbledore (and eventually Harry) to insist on referring to Voldemort as Tom against his wishes."

Person B: "It's manipulation / psychological warfare, certainly. Especially in the final confrontation between Harry and Tom/Voldemort, Harry uses it as such. Deliberately."

Person A: "Absolutely. But I'm more wondering whether that particular form of psychological warfare crosses a line. There have been all too many real-world examples of the refusal to acknowledge an individual's chosen name/identity being used in the real world to tragic effect. There are too many Leelah Alcorns out there.

We're shown all over the place that Voldemort fights dirty, evil, crosses every moral line like it doesn't exist (and refuses to acknowledge that most of them do) - and that the difference between him and Team Dumbledore is that the latter fight fair, fight honorably. Using the favourite trick of the transphobic bigot in the process seems more than a little problematic in retrospect."

Not remotely recently, but a guy in a random IM convo (that's how not recently this was) once told me he was a werewolf. I never worked out whether he was serious (or thought he was serious) and had issues, or if he was messing with me and thought I believed him.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was serious. You've encountered otherkin?

I used to be IRL friends with someone who had some ...interesting ideas about herself, so I believe that people believe this shit while still otherwise sounding like functional human beings.

A bunch of pictures of a kid with Down Syndrome flying like a fairy.

TBH it was pretty demeaning, but naturally the comments were all "oh this made me cry disabled children are angels!"

Wow. In-N-Out seems like the place to buy weed off the Latino fry cook, not score meth.

Damn, I wish I'd known of that when I was eight and my parents wouldn't call me by the nickname I'd started to prefer.

A Kotaku article about a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame. Feeder and birthing fetishes are involved.

I'm currently in a venement argument of pure bred vs farm mutts and the pure bred person is convinced only mutts come from byb and shitty breeders and pure bred are somehow magically exempt from this. I have a headache so I'm being pretty nasty but they did start it with their stupid sweeping statements.

Quotes from Donald Trump.

Also, this isn't recent, but a Voldemort/Pikachu fanfic. Yes, as in shipping.

That reminds me of a fic I came across once where Voldemort would make Wormtail go into rat form and then stick him up his ass.
