Re: Controversial more than unpopular

I'm confused by this. How is disliking a character missing the point? This just seems like someone being like "you just don't get my character!"

To be fair, some of the dislike for Pearl feels really gendered. There are a lot of fandom jokes about how she's "thirsty" and just needs to get laid. It's also relevant that all of the surviving Crystal Gems have a history of screwing up in ways that drag other people down with them. Amethyst used to be really unpopular before she grew up a bit, and it looks like Pearl is headed in the same direction.

Still, Garnet's overestimation of how much others can handle and Amethyst lashing out in rage and self-loathing feel less insidious than Pearl's emotional manipulation. She lied to Garnet so she could use her to feel better about herself, convinced Connie her life means nothing, and let Steven take what could have been a fatal fall without even trying to help him. Garnet's trying to keep her issues under control for the sake of the team, and Amethyst is starting to recognize that she doesn't need to keep feeling worthless, but Pearl just keeps getting worse and letting her negative feelings consume her.

(I have the feeling Garnet is going to be next up on the pain train after Pearl's issues have been resolved. I hope she doesn't completely get thrown under the bus. She's spent most of the show being the most stable and reliable of the gems.)

I agree with you mostly - though my biggest problem with Pearl that it feels that doesn't really get, I don't know, "punished" for her fuck ups like Garnet and Amethyst do. Like, compare how the show treats her in "Sworn to the Sword" (basically teaching Connie that she's needs to die for Steven and that she's worthless if she doesn't) to Amethyst's in "Full Disclosure" (turning into Rose Quartz to emotionally fuck with Greg). It was both really shitty things that come from the character's own inability to deal with their pain, but Amethyst gets an actually angry Steven of all things, Pearl sort of gets a pat on the back and a pep talk.

The whole Sardonyx thing was the first time that I can remember that anyone has really gotten mad at Pearl and her actions had serious consequences. I don't know if it's just me or not. It just grates me.

Holy shit, I rambled hard there, sorry. I'm passionate about fictional alien rocks.
