Re: Unpopular or Controversial Fandom Opinions

Yeah, that's the thing though, if the creators don't know about autism or intend to write an autistic person, they're never going to write a character that's definitively autistic. Even if they base them on real autistic people without knowing those people are autistic. Because those characters aren't going to be exactly like those real autistic people, they're going to have the writer's personal ideas influencing how they act and what their purpose for being in the narrative is, too. I made the rant because it's always the second a headcanoned-autistic character behaves in a non-typical way for an autistic person -- or for any person, just does something completely over the top -- people cry ableism because it's portraying autistic people incorrectly and making them look like total weirdos. So if it was never canon stated that the character was autistic, and they are revealed to not behave like a real autistic person after all, it can be assumed that their previous behavior that seemed autistic was actually just coincidence. And after all, there are also real people who display behaviors associated with autism and turn out not to be autistic.
