[Brooklyn Nine-Nine]

I agree in general, but I think Jake's one of the more palatable and likable examples of the genre - partly because Andy Samberg's a really good guy, and partly because I think they do a really good job of showing him being, at heart, a really compassionate, decent guy. And not a jerkwad.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And also because a lot of the time his man-child act actually hurts him in some way and has consequences that he can only avoid by growing up a little.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Yep, absolutely. And the show is good about making sure he does face consequences. (I can't say the same for Gina. Sigh.)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
And they show him actually being good at his job (in addition to actually facing consequences for being a man-child, as others have said). You can see why he's in the position he's in, he's not just there because of reasons. He's actually a skilled detective who puts a lot of effort into what he does.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure how far you were when you made this secret, OP, but he does get better, particularly towards the end of the first season. I don't know if you've seen The Office or Parks and Rec, but it's kind of like how Michael and Leslie became more likable as the show went on (okay, Michael always wavered a bit). Not that Jake's really like either character, except for his clear love for the job, but it gets easier to root for him and believe that he really is a good cop. (Although I was surprised when I realized he's supposed to be 34, since he acts more like he's right out of college.)

*nods* "Fancy Brudgom" (episode 1x20) was the real turning point for me in how I viewed Jake; while he's still incredibly annoying at times, I find persuasive the characterization of him as a generally goodhearted person.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He's certainly that type, but at least he's better than J.D. of Scrubs.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
god, fuck JD

always and forever

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Expressing a desire to fuck JD always and forever? I can't decide if you are Elliott or Turk.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, I thought he really grew up and improved a lot in season 8. In fact, that seemed to be a lot of the point of that season.

Okay, I've watched very little of Scrubs, but this made me laugh. Eight seasons is quite a while to wait for someone to 'grow up'.

Not saying you don't have a point, just that if someone dislikes a character for that long it might be difficult for them to change their mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Oh yeah, I get that, but I just mean that I wouldn't agree with the previous anon's "always and forever" because it wasn't always and forever.

However, I didn't watch Scrubs in it's initial run, but much faster after it had already aired. It probably feels different that way. ;)

Ah, right, gotcha; they did say always and forever, so you have a point.

Though I still imagine it might be hard for some people (especially ones who watched from the beginning, as the show aired) to overcome their hatred that far into the show, I'm not saying it's impossible! And frankly sometimes it's nice to see a character change (for the better) even if you hold a certain amount of dislike for them and never truly come to love them.

Marathoning is definitely a different experience though. Not a bad one, just different!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, but the anon didn't say JD was a manchild always and forever, only "fuck JD, always and forever". Even if he changes and gains maturity after eight seasons, the anon doesn't have to like him as a character.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
He's definitely written in a more bearable way, but it's hard for me to see it as growth, or for it to make up for the other 7 seasons, in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't watched this show, but this is why I finally quit watching Psych. I just couldn't stand Shawn any longer.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Shawn was so annoying. I loved Gus, but I couldn't watch that show because of Shawn.

He's not my favourite character in the show and I wasn't so keen on him to begin with because of his 'man-child' character but I liked that the show actually has him face consequences for his immature behavior and he learns from it. He's still not my fave but I like him more now than I did at the beginning.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
He has a great heart, anon.

Spoilers:

For example, he punches someone (who was his hero, no less) who is homophobic towards his the boss.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I can see why some people might applaud that, but it's sort of a simplistic approach. How about we don't punch anyone even if they say dickish things?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree about that kind of character in general, but Jake develops positively as the show goes on.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're feeling you're missing out on it, which, it's possible that you would be, stop for a while. Sulk on how Jake is, then when you try again you'll be thinking he's way worse than he actually is and thus will be pleasantly surprised the next go around.

I think it helps when people don't pretend like this kind of character is actually charming and Jake's messing about isn't really tolerated.

Then your going to love him as Lex in Batman Vs Superman

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, gee, I posted a casting spoiler. Come and arrest me Lawyer!Anon.

Except Andy Samburg isn't Jesse Eisenberg.
