I effing HATE people who quote stuff and just expect everyone will know where it's from. Especially if they act like I'm stupid, or make a huge fuss of how I haven't watched something they thought "everyone" watched.

It gets better. Next they tell you that you HAVE to watch it and make you feel like a sub-human for not wanting to watch the show they stole their crappy quote from.

I feel the same about Firefly fans who do that. I was so massively, MASSIVELY creeped out when I realized where "I'll be in my bunk" comes from.

I don't know if they actually expect everyone to recognize the quotes. I sympathize with how annoying it gets to hear these kind of quotes all the time, like a group of friends being really obnoxious about their inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else, but I usually assume they know that not everyone is going to get it.

This is how I feel, yea.

I'm certainly not constantly quoting media, but on the rare occasion I do...people usually don't pick up on it and I don't give them flack for it or push them about it. You either get it or you don't; it isn't a big deal.

Now if someone was doing it all the time and then being an ass about you not understanding, then yea, absolutely that would be irritating.

8'll grant you "there's always money in the banana stand," but some of the best quotes are not situation specific. You don't need context, because the quote works with YOUR context.

Unless by "fans" you just mean your stupid friends.

Someone get this hothead outta here.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Context doesn't make any of it more funny or less dumb.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Don't try to make other people responsible for your own ignorance! If you don't already know this stuff, then don't try to have an opinion, just shut up and listen! It's not my job to educate you!

And yet all I could think of when reading the paragraph:

"It's an ALLUSION, Michael!"

yup

"There's always money in the banana stand". Yep, I'm one of those annoying fans. lol. I quote The Middleman all the time because it was "sheer elegance in it's simplicity", but I don't really expect people to get what I'm talking about because I'm pretty sure only about ten people watched that show.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Would you say people like that need to take a good hard look at themselves and conclude, "I've made a horrible mistake"?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Just yesterday I read an article on Splitsider about 'consumer comedy', meaning when the mere mention of a pop culture shibboleth is the punchline. Though the article focused on non-comedy references, like twerking.

And I'm in the middle of Armchair Nation by Joe Moran, which used Monty Python fans as a notable example of the "see, I watched this show TOO! I am one of you!" quoting phenomenon. The book's about TV, so it didn't go into what happened when Python met internet.

I think the only reason I've never been too annoyed by comedy quoters is that I've never had to be around the worst offenders IRL. When I see them in comments section, a) I don't go into comments sections with high expectations, and b) I just get the feeling quoters want to be acknowledged, because it feels good to know other people love a show too. Even a snobby keyboard warrior wants to know that the cabal that still favours quality over the mainstream crap that sheeple lap up these days for push-button laughs has more than one member.

And seriously, in the right situation, I'd quote shows I like too.

'Shibboleth' is a really useful concept to reference here, I think.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I really should not have read through the Arrested Westeros(?) blog before watching the series. I watched two whole seasons without laughing once. It was horrible and boring. I guess that's why they call 'em spoilers.
