I'm not in the Phandom (tho I am in musical fandom general) nor am I someone who lives near broadway so I'm not one of the people boycotting, but I have heard a lot of people saying they are boycotting, luckily.

Cheer up, whether or not he's a rapist, and therefore pure evil and should be boycotted in everything, depends on what legal jurisdiction he's standing in. Pure evil is pretty fungible that way.

I would still support the show. I'd just make sure it was an "alternate" performance (aka the understudy is playing the role). No reason to hate my favorite musical because out of all the Phantoms that have been cast, one is a slimebag.

Especially since I thought Phantom was no longer on Broadway thanks to The "Sequel" Which Must Not Be Named. I'm so happy it's still there/back!

Phantom of the Opera is the longest running broadway show, I don't know if it did close for a bit but it has still been running for years.

No one is saying "never go to a Phantom show again", they are saying "Don't go while the convicted sex offender is cast to send Broadway a message." You can't know you are buying tickets for an understudy show, so imo people should just wait until they recast Barbour.

NAYRT-- but I thought he was convicted; he certainly served jail time. He's just not on a registry. Which isn't great, but that just means people should always respond to news of his being cast in anything with "why the fuck does this slimeball still have a job? He raped a fifteen-year-old girl, ffs." Like, his name gets mentioned anywhere, people should just automatically think "oh yeah that creep" and refuse to watch anything he's in, because everyone should know what he did. His full name should be James "raped a 15 year old" Barbour.

Eh, I have some idea. I honestly am not trolling and I'm not sure what it was that I said that bothered you, though. Like, it might suck for his victim if Barbour actually did end up with that epithet, because I'm sure she doesn't need or want any reminders that it happened. And of course it would be better if he was registered, but the next best thing is having his potential audience, ie the general theatergoing public, know what he did, so they can decide whether or (hopefully) not to give him money. Also, I'm not the anon who said they'd still see the show. The only money I've spent on Phantom since Barbour was cast was on fabric and trim for cosplay.

And if you're saying I'm an ass because Barbour shouldn't be widely known as a sex offender, especially if you think so because you think he's maybe not guilty, he admitted guilt. He also basically called his victim a gold-digging opportunist who wouldn't have come forward if it weren't for the attention. Even if by some minuscule chance he wasn't aware she was so young, that kind of makes him an asshole.

No he was convicted, he just got a slap on the wrist punishment, and is cast in one of the biggest (and most popular with young female fans) roles on Broadway despite his conviction.

He's a good chunk of why I'm kinda avoiding the phandom a bit these days. Although I did see the production photos where someone photoshopped in a black utility trashcan in Barbour's place. And the post where someone sent him a bag of gummy candy dicks because he deserved to eat a bag of dicks. I don't think he's got that many supporters in the phandom, tbh; it seems like a combo of his existing fans following him when he joined the cast, and people who just go see the show and have no fucking clue who the actors are. Hell, every performance of POTO I've seen had at least one person in the audience who was sure they were seeing Crawford/Brightman/Barton (Barton's dead, you guys!)
