Lesbian sword fighting and flower arranging anime.

Important questions:

A) How anime is it
B) How much of a slog is it

Because it's always seemed kind of interesting, and your description here doesn't lessen that interest, but I'm just really, really, really leery of trying to get into new anime shit. There's just been too many times something ended up being awful one way or another, or just boring.

A) Really 90s anime

B) I don't know you like your pacing, but the series is 39 episodes.

I love Utena, but it's also bizarre on purpose. I've seen a lot of people compare it to Twin Peaks, but I haven't seen Twin Peaks yet.

I love Twin Peaks and weirdness is not a big deal at all! I guess with the stuff about anime, I mean more, are there a ton of things that are skeevy and fanservice-y, or ultra cliched, or generally horseshit.

39 episodes isn't toooooooooo bad... does it take a while to get good, or what?

Oh, I get you! I honestly wasn't sure if you meant general weirdness in the genre or fanservice since "anime" always gets used for both, so I just assumed you meant the first one.

It's also been a while since I've seen it, but for me it went very quickly because I binged. I don't watch most longer series anymore, but I personally found it much faster than one of the director's current works at the time, and that was a shorter series. There are some uncomfortable narrative elements, but a lot of it is an attempted deconstruction, so it would really just depend how you liked it. I'm sorry if this doesn't help much in the end! I actually loved it so much that I made an AMV for it when I was done, but I always hedge since most of my friends who also like anime thought it was too weird to be accessible. I also wasn't around for the Utena secrets, so this is just a random add-on.

For me, it was interesting right out of the gate, and got even more so as the series progressed. Yes, there are skeevy elements, but they are intentionally/artistically skeevy to make the viewer both aroused and unsettled. In my opinion, it's an anime you can enjoy at face value, but the more you think about and analyze it, the deeper it becomes.

Just.. don't watch the movie first. It's even more abstract than the TV series. Watch it afterwards, as it's sort of an even-trippier AU of the TV series.
