When did your parents start seeming elderly?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Trigger warning: Not fandom related.

I'm only 19, but my parents had me quite old. My Dad's mind is going and I'm kind of terrified. Did anyone else go through this? How did you do it?

I'm 33, and my dad and step-mom don't really seem elderly to me yet. To be fair, I haven't seen them in a few years, so my memory of them is of how they looked last time I saw them. They're the same on the phone.

In contrast, my birth mother has seemed elderly for most of my life. She's the youngest of the three of them too. I think it's that she's a drug addict, and that's completely destroyed her health. It's aged her a lot.

SA

How old are their parents? My Dad is in his late seventies.

My step-mother is 70. My father and birth mother are both 60.

Once over 60...they do seem to get "older" fast. With m dad...the big scare was when he got cancer. Yeah, I am terrified of of losing them, but the fear is pointless in a wa, because it's inevitable; it's just a matter of time.

My parents are in their 60s but they don't really seem old. The only thing I can point to is when my mom became a little hard of hearing (my dad's always been hard of hearing) but that doesn't actually come up that much. Most of my dad's medical issues came about in his late 30s-40s and he went gray young too. My mom's healthy as a horse with tons of energy. Both of them are still super sharp. They seem to have remained the same for the last few decades.

*Crossing fingers they stay healthy and happy*

My mom was 38 when I was born. Daddy was 39. They've always seemed old to me. Although recently Mom's been tripping and hurting herself a lot. Daddy got hearing aids years ago. Neither one of them has a cell phone and they don't like technology.

My parents died young, with them it was mostly physical decline, so our experiences differ. But I was about your age, so I might be able to help there. I don't know if it helps, but it's ok to be terrified, to be sad. You should be there for your Dad and your Mom, but make sure someone's there for you as well.

My dad's like 63, and my mom is about to turn 60, but neither of them come close to seeming elderly yet. At least not to me.

My parents are already in their mid 60s and they don't seem old to me yet. I guess for me I don't see someone as old until they have grey/white hair? I don't know.

Not yet, though my mom is in her 50s and my dad is 78.

I'm 32 and my dad started getting old when I wasn't looking. He complained a lot about his knee in recent years; now I suspect he won't be complaining much about anything for a while. :(

With mom it's also been in recent years -- her sight and hearing are going to shit and she doesn't have the stamina she used to.

They're starting to seem that way now. There have been some extended-family events recently that have kind of brought this home, what with looking at old photos and noticing how my cousins (all younger) have grown up and are getting married and having kids. My parents are both over 65. My mother recently retired and so have two of her siblings. The last person of my grandparents' generation still alive has taken a real downturn. It's less about my parents themselves and more about the context making me very aware of how time has passed.

My dad died at 61; i guess my mom only really started to seem old since then; it's been four years, but more to the point her drug and alcohol issues got worse and she had 3 different kinds of cancer. That combo would age anyone.

Probably about 5 years ago, after my Dad turned 60 and started really playing up the "Old Man" attitude. He's always been a bit of an old-fashioned attitude on a whole (he's stuck back in the 60s), but it's gotten worse as he's reached "senior" age.

Mum is a bit different because she has a bit more of a willingness to accept modern stuff (Dad is a bit of a technophobe and can barely even use to basic functions of his mobile phone), but she's got to the point where her stories are repetitive and her overall attitude is getting a bit more "old lady". Plus she has her fair share of health-related issues that those which aren't diabetes-related are age-related.

Only when my mum said recently that my dad was getting a bit past heavy physical labour. But other than that they bounce around in life, they're youth and health obsessed and go travelling around the world a lot and take nude pics of each other. In their mid 60s.

When my dad was in an accident (truck veered off road and ploughed into him) and when my mum took a fall and was in hospital.

Both made me highly aware of those grey hairs and lines on their face. They're both mid 50s? So still young I guess, but I worry.

I deal with it by pretending its not happening and visiting less so I don't see the evidence :(

Right now. They are self sufficient but are rapidly approaching retirement. I just hope they can stay healthy like their parents were so I am hopeful.

My dad was in his 60s when I was in college, so I was around...22? Anywho, I had to deal with him getting a really aggressive cancer, beating it for like, 6 to 7 months, then getting it back and was gone by that June. I had issues with my dad that I'm still hung up on even to this day, but losing him was still hard. That was in '09.

My mom is starting to slip at 65. I wish she hadn't had me at 42. I love my mom and it's painful.
