Does anyone else think...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
That Dion singing both "The Wanderer" and "Runaround Sue" is sort of hypocritical?

yup!

Yes, its the good old ~double standard.

that's pretty much my issue with Rolling Stones' "Under my thumb" - besides the obvious ick factor

No different than Taylor Swift singing "You Belong to Me" and "We're Never Getting Back Togther", or whatever the fuck those songs are called, tbh

Its almost like singers can feel two different ways at two different points in time

Re: Does anyone else think...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
But "Runaround Sue" is SO damn catchy...

I think it's generally not wise to treat the singer of a song as the speaker of its lyrics

It's just a song, it doesn't have to be their real feelings

I think what the OP anon is getting at is that on the one hand, it's okay for the male in the Wanderer to be 'free', but on the other, heaven forfend a female wants to be 'free' a la Runaway Sue, hence the feeling of it being hypocritical

The two songs conflict with each other. I agree with that.

I don't think you can conclude from that fact that the singer is a hypocrite. Singing the songs doesn't mean endorsing every word of their lyrics.

OP of thread

I want to clarify that I don't think that the singer himself is a hypocrite. I just think that the situation shows the hypocrisy of the double standard.

Oh, sure, I agree there's a real damned big double standard in society, I just don't think Dion has a thing to do with it.

Of course!

Though what bugs me most is that the guy in The Wanderer has sympathetic analysis of his feelings and the way he feels compelled to run whenever he finds himself falling for someone, while Runaround Sue is totally one-dimensional and her motivations for her flightiness is never examined.

Well of course, but it's a common sexual double standard that's been with us for quite some time. Men are studs for having a bunch of girlfriends, but women are sluts if they have more than one boyfriend.
