Why would you tip differently for nonalcoholic drinks? Is tipping in a bar different from a restaurant in the USA (I'm assuming)? Unless I'm getting myself a glass of tap water at the bar I just tip the same percentage as I do normally.

It depends on the bar.

In fancy nightclubs or cocktail places, it's still 20%. But if it's just, like, a bar to get drinks, it's usually done to just tip a dollar per drink instead.

Depending on the bar, they might not charge you at all. Or it will be free refills so if you're drinking soda all night, your bill is only going to be $2.

The one bar I frequent (so I'm a regular) if I'm the DD for friends that night, they won't charge me at all and they never charge my dad at night either.

How cheap are non-alcoholic drinks in the USA? I'm usually the DD, and non-alcholic drinks usually cost around 4-5 USD for soda and juice, 7-10 USD if you want a non-alcoholic cocktail. So I still pay at least $10 whenever we go out. They'll give you water for free when you need to sober your friends up again, but not much else. I once got free coke at a party when my friend was barely responsive once, but that's it.

That's really cool of your bar, though!

A soda at the bar I go is usually $2-3 with unlimited refills and water is always free. Non-alcoholic drinks can vary in price, but I think a sprite with grenadine is about $4. I know they have coffee and hot chocolate at the bar and they'll specially make me hot chocolate with baileys or kahlua and whipped cream, so I don't know how much it costs without alcohol. I think coffee is $2.50, but I could be wrong.

My hard cider is usually $6 and I think the Coors Light is $3 a pint. Drinks are really cheap at the bar I go to I guess. I think red sangria with fruit is $7. This bar is really more like a pub with half your standard bar and half restaurant.
