The difference is I see no real evidence for the latter thing

I'm puzzled as to why you think that just because you haven't personally experienced something, that means there's no evidence for its existence. I mean I've never personally visited North Dakota, but I know that 1) it exists and 2) other people go there and experience it even if I haven't.

Well a lot of it depends on what claim you're making

Are we saying that there exists out there at least one fangirl who relates to things mostly on the basis of cuteness? Or are we saying that fangirls in general do this? Or somewhere in between?

The secret says "some fangirls". That's somewhat vague, but I don't have a problem believing that there are more than two or three fangirls who only relate to things based on whether or not it's cute, and that the OP knows of such people.

That's fair enough.

I was taking it as a more general comment - that, if not the majority, at least a significant portion of fangirls do it - and I don't think that's justifiable.

How many people draw chibi art for their fandom? How many people like it, reblog it, or whatever? I couldn't put a firm number to that, but it's an arguably significant one.

Well, no, that goes back to my point: liking chibi art does not imply that you're only able to engage with things in terms of cuteness.

...if someone is looking at fucked-up stories about murderers and damaged people and their first impulse is to turn them into adorable little munchkins and make them have tea parties? Which, clearly, a lot of fangirls do? That's evidence.

That's part of the joy of it. There's a lot of ironic comedy in making certain things cute.
