Oh, Touga. I have never wanted so badly to punch a fictional character in the face.

Although I have to remind myself that he at least has the excuse of being a teenager. The same cannot be said for Akio.

It's true. I mean I do kind of forgive him because he is a teenager, but I, too, wanted to punch him SO HARD. He is such a douche. I was amazed by his sheer colossal levels of douchiness.

See, Akio was way past "douche" and deep into "horrible, horrible excuse for a human being" territory.

Yes, exactly! Touga's the main bad guy of the first story arc, so its really easy to just think, "YOU ARE A BAG OF DICKS, FUCK YOU WITH A CACTUS."

But then Akio comes on the scene, and the more you learn about him the more you start to think "Sweet merciful mother of fuck, what is WRONG with you? HOLY FUCKING SHIT."

And then you look back at Touga and he doesn't seem so bad in comparison. Like, "Yeah, you're still a bag of dicks, but I remember what it was like to be your age so I'll guess I'll give you a pass."

Well, I don't *quite* give him a pass, because fucking with Nanami about not being her brother, and then the sexual stuff was really cruel.
I know, Nanami sucks too - but she's 13, so she gets more of a pass, even. And Nanami actually grows up a bit as the series goes on. Yes she's a spoiled brat, but Touga is a holy terror.

The irony is, I think he was less awful as a person in the 1st arc - manipulative, yes, but later on he was just WOW TOUGA.

Also lol @ his treatment of Nanami in the egg episode when he's SCREWING AKIO. Hello Mr. Hypocrisy.

I just really, really enjoyed him though. Him and Akio. Talk about shitbags, wow, but I liked them as villains. Nemuro was great too.

Oh shit, I completely forget about him telling Nanami he wasn't really her brother! That was such a dick move. Objectively it's far from the worst thing he does in series (he does sooooo many shitty things), but I found that extra-upsetting because dude, this is your little sister who worships the ground you walk on. Why are you doing this to her? Oh right, you're doing it because you're a GIANT BAG OF DICKS.

But yeah, that is part of what makes him such a good villain.

(And seconding your lol at the egg episode. No lie, that actually made me do a spit-take.)

His treatment of Nanami is so awful in part because he doesn't even have an excuse for it. He doesn't gain anything at all, he's just a dick for the sake of being a dick. It's probably one of his most dickish moments in the entire show, imo.

I admit, I know there's symbolism, but I lol'd at the bits where he and Akio were taking sexy pictures on top of the pile of cars.

Hahaha. This opinion always slays me. It's like there are two groups of Utena fans, those that grasp the series on the surface, and those who understand the symbolism and surrealist quality that runs through it.

Read up on Jung and two works by Hermann Hesse - Demian and Steppenwolf. The 'chick and egg' speech in Utena is practically ripped verbatim from Demian. Get a grounding in that symbolic framework, and you'll get what's really going on.

*** SPOILERS FOR THE RGU SERIES BELOW!!!! (The movie is a different beast)****

Neither Anthy, Akio, or Dios are 'human.' Akio symbolizes the Devil, the Shadow. He's the counterpoint to Dios' Light since, you know, they're the same person and everything. Anthy's actions split all the good that was Dios and sealed it away, leaving the Shadow. The duels and the Duelists are symbolic steps towards breaking that 'egg' and thereby enabling Akio and Dios to merge into one being once more.

In an astonishing twist, some people are able to simultaneously experience Utena on more than one level!

For example, one can enjoy them as characters, which they are ultimately presented as - characters with lives and backstories and development - and ALSO appreciate their symbolic aspects.

I mean then there are fans like you, who are just looking for places to be elitist. I mean the Akio/Dios thing was probably the most painfully obvious symbolic element in the entire series. I still enjoyed Akio as a villain.
idk, you can just fuck off with your elitism, me and the other anon were having a nice conversation.

DA - What you said. AYRT is so smug that I couldn't even finish their comment, it just annoyed me too much.
Guess what mate! Other people did the reading too! You're not that special!

Seriously. Assuming that just because people want to talk about the characters they ~~~~~~~*****don't understand*****~~~~~~~~ the symbolism.
I am still floored by how fucking smug that comment is.

....maybe Touga visits f!s
