(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)If the guy repairing your computer doesn't recognize the name Steve Wozniak, would that cause you concern?
If your lawyer stares blankly at the name Earl Warren, would you keep him as your lawyer?
If the person lecturing you about feminism on Tumblr indicates that they've never heard of Sojourner Truth, Betty Friedan, or bell hooks, would you continue listening to them lecture you?
Are you familiar with a concept called "professional standards"?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure what's even going on here. Yeah, anon is appalled. They're outraged, offended. Super dismayed. They explained why- it's a subject that's important to them, and someone who they feel should know better fucked it up. I'm sorry their level of feeling has crossed some you-mandated line. But considering you don't actually care that Felicia Day messed up, I think the person who does care can set the bar. Quite frankly I find this point-and-smirk method of discrediting someone on the internet ...appalling!
Appalling. In that I am appalled. Just so we're clear. You can lower that arched eyebrow. Give that baby a rest.

Not especially, because being able to namedrop Apple entrepreneurs from the 70s and 80s who were featured in two different films doesn't mean you know your way around a test bench or multimeter. Nor would I be all that concerned if someone got mixed up on which microcomputer pioneer did what given the parallel development and outright intellectual theft of the time. Funny enough, being able to win Trivial Pursuit: 1980s Edition isn't one of our professional standards.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)Besides, in this scenario, the computer repair guy knew the name Steve Wozniak. He just got his contributions temporarily mixed up with those of Steve Jobs.
NAYRT
(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 06:25 am (UTC)(link)He could draw a blank at Steve Jobs, too, and as long as he seemed like he knew what he was doing with my computer, I wouldn't give a fuck. Same goes with the lawyer and Earl Warren.
If the person lecturing you about feminism on Tumblr indicates that they've never heard of Sojourner Truth, Betty Friedan, or bell hooks, would you continue listening to them lecture you?
I would absolutely continue to listen to a feminist who didn't know about any of those people. Hell, in my experience, the amount of feminist lit one has read is only very loosely related to how well they actually grasp the concepts of feminism. Let's keep in mind how many people are exposed to those key players of feminism for no other reason than because they've heard 1st/2nd/3rd year Women's Studies is a breezy GPA booster. Meanwhile, that 18 year old waitress, with no idea who these key figures are, has a feminist parent who's been talking about objectification, the gender binary, the ratification of the ERA, maternal mortality rates, the global accessibility/inaccessibility of birth control, etc., etc., since she was eight.
Ask me who I'd rather listen to.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 06:53 am (UTC)(link)this is such a dumb hypothetical question. why the hell do I care if an IT guy knows about the history of computers? it's not like that would enable him to actually repair one. I know who Steve Wozniak is and I still don't know shit about fixing computers. I also don't need my plumber to give me a goddamn lecture about the life and accomplishments of Sir John Harington to feel confident that he can unclog a toilet
