SHIBBOLETH! One of my favourite words! (I like it because of Tolkien.)

Nah, just a Tolkien fan with a fondness for "The Shibboleth of Fëanor".

I do know the basic gist is that one group had problems with foreign infiltrators and the word "shibboleth" became a test to see who was foreign and who was not because the foreigners had problems pronouncing parts of that word, like the SH and TH. It might have come from one of the apocryphal books of the Bible.

Tolkien used it for the title of the story about Fëanor because it was all about a language change in Valinor that led to Fëanor and his followers having a characteristic pronunciation for certain words.

Actually, it was more of a civil war type thing, and anybody who mispronounced "shiboleth" as "siboleth" was recognized as the enemy and slaughtered. The story appears in the Book of Judges.

CLEARLY, YOU ARE A FAKE GEEK GIRL.

...Tolkien, however, knew his stuff.
