It's a publishing thing, unfortunately. It's difficult for anyone who isn't already a big name to get genre fiction published unless they've at least got a trilogy planned, because it's easier to milk a fanbase for a single premise over a number of years than it is to build a new fanbase for works that might vary wildly in tone and content.
