This episode bothers me because the aesthetics are clearly going for 80's while the canon timeline points to 90's. Also why does Amethyst look like a baby when she was already thousands of years old at this point :(

Regarding Amethyst's appearance:

1. I saw a theory on tumblr that said maybe the shock of Rose's death caused the other Crystal Gems to physically age. (If you look closely at Garnet and Pearl, they appear slightly younger in the flashbacks.)

2. Even if that's not true, it's canon that gems can shapeshift to look however they want. There are multiple episodes centered on this fact.

Yeah, I got the feeling she was content to be a "child" then, and just maintained that particular form/"age". The Gems do say they are as old as they want to appear. We do see that she hung with Vidalia a lot, and looks more like her current form. I think maybe she started to let herself "age" after they met Greg and Vidalia and she wanted to be more grown-up. (Like a little kid wanting to hang out with the big kids)

If you look closely at everyone during the flashback episodes, and compare heights (especially with the size of static things like the van), everyone is actually pretty much the same height they are in the modern day. It's just that 1) everything's framed around Rose, who was incredibly tall, so everyone else looks shorter around her, and 2) their looks (especially Amethyst's) make them look a lot younger without really changing their proportions much.

Hell forbid anyone like anything from 10 years ago, huh.
Maybe the 80's were/are Greg Universe's favorite decade.

Writing 101: your story is set in the 90's? You want your audience to RECOGNIZE this time period? Then throw some 90's shit in there. Not the decade before it.

This is not rocket science dude

Does it have to be specifically mid-to-late 90s? Because the early 90s still had a lot of the trappings of the 80s, it's not too far-fetched.

(I've not seen the show)

Logically, '94 is about the latest it can really be placed. The present sections are set in the present, and there's no real way Sour Cream is older than about 20 - and the first flashback episode, "Story For Steven", makes it clear that Greg met Rose and the Gems on the same day Sour Cream was conceived.

Shit. Brain fart. "'94 is about the earliest it can really be placed."
