The problem isn't the emotional labor qua emotional labor. Emotional labor is pretty much the thing that is necessary for civilization-having. The problem is that society assigns the burden for emotional labor to women more than it ought, and especially that it inculcates a set of expectations concerning emotional labor in men which are both wrong and unfair.

Also our society is in general alienating and shit in a way that falls more heavily on less favored classes.

I don't think I'm even arguing with anyone here, it's just a thought that I had that I wanted to right down. I guess, if anything, my point is that doing emotional labor is both good and necessary, and it's fucked up that it has to take on this deeply unfair character.

Um... I know you said you weren't sure if you were arguing, but I'd like to point out that nobody either here or in the metafilter thread suggested that nobody should ever do emotional labor, or that emotional labor was a bad thing.

Yeah, like I said, I pretty much realize that it's not actually opposed to anything anyone said. It was mostly just a thought in my head that I wanted to make sure that I got out. And also to emphasize in particular how much of a profoundly good thing it is that we as humans can do this for other humans.
