I like how after all the "Why do women care so much about birthday cards, anyway? Just don't do them if you don't want to. This problkem will just go away if you stop doing things you don't want" debate, someone comes along with data on how widowers and other older men without partners suffer from isolation and related problems because they didn't develop habits to maintain social contacts and relationships.
