A thread yesterday got me wondering.

Does anyone else post opinions or thoughts here that aren't their own? I do it a lot with controversial things my friends or family or coworkers say and their arguments for or against certain positions or issues. Not in a trolling way, mind you, all the 'kill yourself' spam is stupid. One or two have become wanky and were accused of being trolls but it wasn't intended.

It's a fun way to gauge everyone's reactions to the positions and compare them to how I reacted and whether I overreacted or underreacted when the real people said them. And to see what arguments I could have or should have made. Or if they were right and I was wrong and someone else can fill in the perspective.

Just me?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope.

Everything I post here is 100% me. That's what makes it so fresh and delightful.

Several users on this board have confessed to doing exactly that. It's a very common trolling practice. Yes. It's trolling.

I think trolling implies an element of malice (even just of the shit-stirring variety) and desire to antagonize and/or harass. Which this, on its face, definitely does not.

It's trolling if you intend to start wank, I'd think. Most of what I post is not inflammatory and if it is, it's by accident.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not exactly, but I will play devil's advocate at times.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Kill yourself. The devil needs his advocates in hell with him, not up here on Earth.

I can't recall ever having posted views that weren't my own here.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No. In the past I have occasionally posted views similar but more extreme than my own on anon to see the reaction, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've pretended to be a woman in the text of a secret just so as to not be attacked for having a controversial opinion AND a dick.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a dick? Gross

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eww *points and laughs at the dick*

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've made up entire scenarios just to see what reaction it gets.

But is this post one of them?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not made up.

I don't ever present other people's thoughts as my own. If I want to compare my reaction to other people's, I just say "someone told me X today, what do you think?" I don't know what I gain from pretending it's my own argument.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A more honest answer, a lot of the time. If I say "a friend told me this and I'm worried that she might be being harassed," people are primed to already tell me to check it out or ask. If I repeat exactly what my friend said to me, and other people also see warning flags in what she said, I know I'm not only being overly paranoid and overreacting to jokes.

That's a made up example, but that kind of post.

I've occasionally posted an opinion that's mind but fudged either my explanation or reason because I'm one of those people who hate it when people reply with "hi [user]." Not that I've used my username for a looooooong time but still.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I do it, but sort of involuntarily. I never troll or post stuff to be deliberately wanky, and I try to always attack arguments instead of people. But I will do the devil's advocate thing for the sake of an interesting discussion, and I'm definitely sure I'll overreact or act more indignant about things than I actually am.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I pretty much post my actual opinion.

I have quite happily paraphrased people I know or opinions I see on tumblr into secrets. I usually then ignore those secrets cause it feels weird arguing with a secret I post myself. Unless I already wrote an angry reply, saved it as a draft, posted the opinion I hated to FS then posted my reply to the secret.

Have yet to do that but think I will now. So many annoyed fandom replies I write where after I type it out I delete it.

No. I might occasionally play devil's advocate, but never downright state something I disagree with.

Being myself takes enough effort as it is; I'm not going to pretend to be/think something else on top of that.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, i'll even post stuff that's come from my own mind but don't believe in the slightest too

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. It's fun to try and start a little wank every once in awhile to try and get people worked up.
