Lying movie trailers!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes a trailer gives away too much of the plot. Sometimes a trailer gives away too much of the wrong plot.

What are some movie trailers that gave viewers the wrong idea about what a movie was going to be about?

Based on the fact that the Victor Frakenstein trailers were released and the UK vs US trailer show a very different movie.

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE THREAD!!!

"In Bruges" had a trailer - in my country at least - that made it look like a harmless, almost light-heated gangster comedy movie. It's really not.

Bridge To Terabithia. https://youtu.be/3SvqEIKP4t8

I read the book so I knew what was going to happen. But I bet some people were shocked!

Oh. And Magic Mike. Like, wtf. Half way thru it turns into some kind of movie about drug abuse??

That was my first experience with a really misleading trailer. I was so angry when I saw the trailer because I thought the movie had actually changed the book completely to be something like what the trailer showed.

Same. I avoided the movie because of the trailer.

Yeah I know a lot of people were disappointed by Bridge to Terabithia's trailer if they hadn't read the book.

Oooooh jesus that movie. Me and my friends had never read the book before going in and we were all expecting a Narnia-like movie... we were so very wrong.

Yeah, and I can't imagine how parents felt when they took their 7 year olds so see it.

About Time is the first one that comes to my mind. The trailer made it look like a dumb, gimmicky rom com.
When my cousin took me to see it at the cinema, I was pretty confused. I mean, if you need to bring a girl with you to justify wanting to watch girly movies, okay then. No judgement.
Two hours later we were pretending not to cry together and hugging for way too long when we said goodbye because that movie hit me hard and I'm glad I saw it with family. We were unprepared, man.

Magic Mike was not nearly as full of sexy funtimes as advertised.

Magic Mike XXL made up for it! Though it still had some weird scenes that broke the flow of the movie...

Holy shit, My Girl. The trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdhsJ_-olpk) advertised it as a quirky sort of coming of age story about a girl with a mortician father who has a hopeless crush on an older man and led you to believe that she might fall in love with her best friend instead at some point. "This seems cute," I thought. "Plus, the guy from Ghost Busters is in this, so it'll probably be funny," I thought.

I watched it in theaters with my mother and we both cried our eyes out.

My aunt told me to watch it without warning me when I was younger. Not cool.

I'd rather a movie trailer gives away the plot rather than try and hide it, or lie about it. Movie tickets are too expensive to waste on something I don't like. Trailers should be honest about stars and genre, and be able to give a short synopsis of the plot as well as any nasty bait and switches they are playing with a franchise. I don't want to go into a movie where it turns out the hero of the franchise is gonna turn out to be the villain all along without warning first.
