Bad DMV experiences?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to the DMV today. The entire place was full - the wait was seven hours. When I filled out an intake form, I went up to someone to ask where I could drop it off, and he said "You can drop it on the floor." After 7 hours of waiting, they told me I couldn't get my car registered at this DMV, and had to go to another one. AAAAH

I'm hard of hearing, and one time while taking a driving test, I kept looking up at the woman giving directions, who kept snapping at me and wouldn't let me explain that I couldn't hear her. Technically I probably could've filed some sort of ADA complaint, but I feel weird pulling the disability card, so instead I told her she was a bitch and left.

What the hell? That's crazy. I'm not American, but I've heard jokes about the DMV - is this a usual thing, I mean, would you usually wait hours? Unreal.

They'd been closed for an entire week (which I wasn't aware of), updating their system. None of the employees knew how to use the new one. Also, there was only one teller. Unusual and sucky.

It really depends. If you plan well, you don't have to wait. I go super early on Saturday mornings and never have a problem if I go in the middle of the month. I also go to certain ones because some locations are worse than others.

Plus everyone's experience is going to vary state by state.

*boggles*

Yeah, but only until 1. It's because the each DMV is only open after 4:30 one night a week, so to accommodate everyone they open on Saturdays.

I live in NJ and as far as I can remember, they've always been open Saturdays 8-1. Or maybe 8-12 for the office, but I know the inspection station opens at 7 AM on Satudays so you want to get there between 730 and 8 for the best time. People wait on line there early.

Ha, nice. Ours is open 8-5, M-F, that's it. Closed on...apparently every holiday ever invented, because it does seem to be close a *lot*.

Worse, though, is the place where you take your license test. That's only open one day a week, and the wait is usually forever.

I think you can only take your practical license during the week. The Saturday hours are for renewals mostly and other paperwork issues. I took the written test at my high school, so I'm not sure how that works.

The DMV does close a lot, but since I only go on Saturdays super early, I've never noticed.

7 hours is unusual, but it is typical in many states and at many offices for there to be a wait of an hour or more, and for the service to be rotten.

I'm lucky that, where I live now, the closest office to me is tiny, tucked away, and rarely busy. When I've had to go, I've been in and out in under 10 minutes, which is amazing.

I've had perfectly fine experiences and speedy service in suburban and small city DMVs. (In Iowa City there was absolutely no waiting and they printed my new license immediately right there.) Big city DMVs are another thing entirely. I actually avoid the one closest to me and drive to a different one because it's actually faster even though it takes longer to get there.

I'm surprised to hear that! I live in one of the biggest cities in the US and I don't think I've ever waited more than an hour at the DMV. They've got the process pretty streamlined here so you're usually in and out fairly quickly.

Holy shit I'm super sorry that happened. Worst DMV experience I had would've been when I had to renew my license and found out they wouldn't take credit despite not actually having a sign to say so. I had to have them put my case on hold so I could make a very long trip to the bank to get some cash and then drive all the way back.

Wow, RUDE. I'd make a complaint. Not that it'd probably do anything, but they still need to be held to a standard of customer service. And 7 hours?! The DMV isn't the DMV if it isn't a long wait, but I thought one hour was horrible.

Went to renew my ID card and waited four hours, only to be told that due to the Patriot Act (this was post - 9/11, I think around 2002), I had to have my birth certificate, SSID school transcripts, and two proofs of address to prove were I live and that I was, infact, a US citizen. Go home scrample for all of that, and another 2 plus hour wait.

Glad I can do the whole thing via mail or online now.

Wow, that sounds unusually bad. Why on earth were you not able to register your car at that location?

My worst experience with the DMV wasn't too bad at all, all things considered. When I changed my name after getting married, I went to the DMV to get my new license and to update the registration on my car. Despite my filling out the form, they never actually made the update (and not only did they not update my name, but they also neglected to update my address. Found out both at tax time). They also, of course, didn't send me an updated title (since, you know, they hadn't actually made the update), which they said was not their problem, so I wound up having to pay the fee to get a copy. Blah.

I once flunked a driving test because the examiner claimed that I had parked too close to the next car. Given how little this skill has impacted my ability to drive well, I think it was a pretty dumb excuse to automatically fail a young driver.

Re: Bad DMV experiences?

Not that bad, but when once when I had to renew my license the person at the DMV told me I had to take the eye test without my glasses on even though I said I would need them and my old license had the restriction code on it (and the next time I renewed my license they immediately let me do the eye test with glasses on so I'm not sure why that guy said I had to do without first). So I did what the guy said and took them off and he told me to read a line. Since I can't see shit without my glasses I told him I couldn't read any of the letters, they were all a blur. The guy sighed like I was being such a bother and told me I had to try. I ended up just spitting out random letters but it took all my willpower not to start reading "F...U...C...K...Y...O...U..."

That sucks and I'd buy you a drink if I knew you. My state allows appointments, I know they have to be made months in advance but it may be worth knowing if your states DMV also takes reservations ( although having a reservation is no guarantee of not having to wait).

Re: Bad DMV experiences?

um

why do people not call a few days ahead and set up an appointment

you can totally do that now (or at least you can where I live)
