Favorite and Least favorite "types" of secrets

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your fave and least fave 'types' of secrets (fandom friend secrets, shipping secrets , fic secrets whatever occurs enough that you consider it a "type"? Why?

My favourite ones are the really bizarre ones that have no real context. I just enjoy being baffled.

So confusing.
I must have more.

Least favorites:

-Ones that are in no way secrets. The sort that are either extremely normal opinions (like "I hate Twilight"), or "I like character/pairing X". Unless the pairing actually is bizarre. I know we're hurting for secrets so take what we can get, but it just doesn't seem worth discussing when it's not remotely secrety.

-Secrets that deliberately don't label the fandom. Because why wouldn't you? Same with any enigmatic secret, like talking about a celebrity but not spilling what celebrity it is. So annoying.

I like:

-Aesthetically interesting secrets. Pretty fonts, or colors, or an excellent picture, definitely awesome

I agree with your least interesting secrets, and I would add to the second one, secrets that hint at fandom_wank but refuse to identify the fandom and/or names of the people involved. Very frustrating!

And + all the 1s for more pretty, pretty secrets.

Agreed on FW! I only find it acceptable if identifying the fandom/fans would out the OP.

Obviously my faves are the ones I know the fandom. I also like broader ones that apply to fandom as a whole.

Secrets about fic writers/writing/writing platforms (AO3/FF)/weird ideas for stories - love all of those.

I like some shippy ones but not the ones where someone doesn't "understand" a ship or character love.

I also like secrets that harken back to when people were kids - like looking at a fandom now, or things you misunderstood, or fandoms you liked back then, or things that freaked you out, etc.

I avoid SJW secrets.

I like sweet fandom friend secrets or secrets about how some fandom helped a person. Those always warm my heart.

I dislike the "I don't/will not read fics with "whatever" when they're excessively mean about it. Like it's one thing to be honest and say "these fics don't interest me/I find them unoriginal" but when the secret goes out of it's way to say "fics like this are always shit" or whatever, it just feels as if they're trying to make people who write whatever it is feel bad.

Like today's secret?

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

Maybe I just don't get the point of getting that worked up over fic you do and don't like or don't read.

Also I kinda find the logic of "I found some bad fics/annoying people who do this , so they're all shitty and bad" to be faulty.

There were some secret cliches that I miss. "I judge you..." and "You were the toaster oven to my blue sunrise ..."

My favorite are the ones about things that happened in OP's childhood that may have been weird/confusing/embarrassing at the time but are funny with distance. My least favorite are "you are a horrible person for liking things I don't like" and "I am going to be super-vague about what this secret is in reference to, but drop obnoxious little 'go on; I dare you to guess what it is!' hints."

""I am going to be super-vague about what this secret is in reference to, but drop obnoxious little 'go on; I dare you to guess what it is!"

Sorta like the thing going on in the assumptions thread. The anon basically said they think someone is a fake/attention seeking but they're refusing to say who it is because "that would be mean". (It was fucking mean to start with but this vagueness just makes it extra mean IMO)

My favorites are the really think-y, text-y ones where OP has a whole theory or line of critique or whatever that they're telling us about in detail

My most fave are the ones about the characters, settings, and meta of a fandom. My least fave are the ones which are basically a blog entry, and with something tenuously and tangentially fandom related to escape the failbar. I get it, I miss blogging and mega tons of personal comments on my personal blog too, but this is not the place.
