Anyhoo, to the voice acting thing. Tidus' dub is definitely a combo of the voice directing--they've since said that most of them were allowed to do whatever they want, so even though the guy's done plenty of work (he even played the final bad guy in Tales of Symphonia, since an anon down thread mentioned it), it ended up being what it was. He decided to make the narration sound like an older Tidus looking back without any prompting, for example.
Yuna's actress was a VA total newbie who audibly improves in the sequel since they were also trying to make her lip-sync exactly to the dialogue, which was a general issue. I also though she fit her character, but she probably did have some growing pains.
I think the same VO director handled FFXII later on, so they clearly got somewhere. That game has a ton of audio issues, but the voice acting is much more fluid... and has dub Balthier.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 09:01 am (UTC)(link)The FFXII English dub still has the best voice acting I've heard in any video game, ever. So many of them are just terrible that it was a really wonderful surprise.

Major props especially to every actor who played relatives of various characters. That can quickly go wrong.

Learning that Yuna's VA was new to the field gives me a new level of appreciation for her work in the game. She did very well, I think, given the givens.
And, yes, the acting in FFXII is definitely much improved -- but so is the quality of the dialogue. The only thing that I couldn't get past was the mispronunciation of "marquis." Drove me bonkers.

Agreed on the dialogue for sure, though. My favorite nerd trivia to trot out is how the Occuria's lines are metered. One even gets its own separate from the rest.
I always did like Yuna's dub actress a lot. I played it as a kid when it released, but even though I do know all of this I'm still very biased. She just has a pleasant voice even with all of the lipsynching and the sometimes weird audio copypaste where they probably reused one recording for everything. I'm the same with Tidus. Once I got onto the internet I saw a more even amount of people who happened to dislike him, but when I was younger it was mooostly guys because he was a jock. I can talk meta about any of the X characters all day, but he's fun because it's exactly what you said. He has a lot of courage and moral fortitude on his own and if the game were dubbed in this day and age we would probably get a lot more of that in the acting... hopefully. It's sort of hit and miss to this day, but when they get good actors, they get really good actors. One of my new faves showed up in the English dub of XIV and I wanted to backflip. That localization is too spoony for a lot of people, but he sold it anyway.
