I'm just taking your point about "same as shoplifting" and running with it.

But lovely to know about your lack of sympathy for being fucking skint.

...okay, I know exactly 0 about this person, but I gotta say I agree with that comment 100%. Why the fuck does biscotti even exist? Is it like some kind of Catholic thing where you have to suffer toothaches and jaw aches and gum abrasions to cancel out the sinful pleasure of eating delicious chocolate-chippy cookie goodness? Fuck biscotti.

I have no idea and it makes me so frustrated because it's one of those things that once you've noticed it you can't seem to ignore it either.

Re: Relationship Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. As someone who is apiphobic (and wasps set me off, too), if I were with someone for 12 years, they'd danged sure know how much I fear them. Usually by witnessing me firsthand running away and shrieking bloody murder if I saw one. And if they knew and got a tattoo like that anyway? Best case scenario: I'd keep bandages big enough to cover it around. Worst case: someone who doesn't care about my health and (limited) sanity isn't someone who is a healthy partner for me.

I equate watching at a friend's house to the library.

My point is that someone can call themselves a fan as long as they aren't stealing.

Watch at a friend's house? Good.

Go to the library? Fine.

Watch in class? Swell.

But if you're stealing/torrenting/pirating, you don't get to call yourself a fan, sorry.

Unfortunately the ad thing has a long, unfortunate history. Ads are nearly universally reviled because of escalation by advertisers to force more and more ads into the face of the user back in the wild and wooly days of pre-streaming internet. People have a long memory, and even if they didn't experience that bullshit first hand, they heard about it from someone who did. And of course there's still plenty of bullshit ads complete with malware, sound, popups, the whole bit.

This goes back a long way.

Re: ???

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
what if they weren't? and if they were what if you are immune to the psychological warfare of advertising and don't have the money for discretionary spending anyway?

Do artists think that unless you show 85% of the actual flesh of the breast, no one will know that there are breasts under the clothing?

Well, whatever makes you feel superior to others, I guess.

Re: Stupid little confessions

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

Given that that's how I get by (I haven't purchased media in years), of course I have no sympathy.

People have so many free options for entertainment (if you have the internet) that there is absolutely no excuse to torrent/pirate unless you're an entitled shit.

Hm. I think cops may have to announce themselves before they can arrest you. Though, I think they should at least get within grabbing distance before they do so.

Er.. someone with a phobia?

When "Bee Movie" was being promoted, it was horrific for me. Yes, it was cartoony. But even just seeing black and yellow stripes is enough to get the adrenaline pumping.

So I guess I should "woman up", too. :p

this stinks of sexism.

Re: Stupid little confessions

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel superior.

I feel that you shouldn't call yourself a fan if you're stealing from the creator.

You can't hurt someone and then claim that you're doing it out of love/care, dude.

If someone downloaded my book illegally, I'd hardly give them a warm reception just because they loved it. They clearly don't respect me because they think my work is worthless and they're entitled to it as though it took no paid labor to produce.

Re: Stupid little confessions

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's not hurting. You seem to be missing that.

Re: +1

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-08-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. For youtube, I can sort of get that. But not for podcasts. 2-3 minutes ad reads are nothing when you are provided with hours of free entertainment.

Re: Stupid little confessions

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
define: entitled

believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

If you believe you inherently deserve access to a particular book, movie, TV show, video game, etc. you are by definition entitled -- no one has a "right" to these things. You feel that you're special and everyone else should pay but you should get it for free.

Re: Favorite fiction-related theories?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-08-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
The Alien/Predator connection is quite old at this point, having been hinted at as early as Predator 2 with the skull of a Queen on a trophy wall. Even if you discount the shitty Alien vs Predator movies, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Predators would view xenomorphs as worthy prey.

Blade Runner gives us the replicants -- versions of the androids we see in Alien/Aliens, and the Tyrell corporation could be Weyland-Yutani's competitor in that market. (And Alien: Isolation, while technically EU material, gives rise to the idea that androids don't have to look human -- the androids in that game are quite freaky-looking and resemble malevolent crash test dummies. This stark difference suggests an explanation for ) Not to mention that humanity has already colonized the stars in Blade Runner, giving rise to the need for deep-space materials transport (read: space trucking) that we see demonstrated in Alien, as well as off-world terraforming as seen in Avatar. The opening sequence of Avatar's Director's Cut (this is important, as it's not in the theatrical version) is in a neon-soaked setting not very similar to that of Blade Runner, complete with mass animal extinction.

There's no real unifying factor, just a number of smaller connections that chain them all together. I suppose if I thought a bit harder I could probably loop Robocop, Escape from NY/LA and The Terminator in there too.

OP (I think) finally settled this question above:

someone can call themselves a fan as long as they aren't stealing.

Watch at a friend's house? Good.

Go to the library? Fine.

Watch in class? Swell.

But if you're stealing/torrenting/pirating, you don't get to call yourself a fan, sorry.

Which, you know, fine, at least they're honest.

My nails make me happy too. Some people get confused about why I paint my nails but don't wear makeup, but I can see my hands all day long whereas I rarely look at my face.
