Re: Stupid little confessions

Of course it is.

People have the right to be paid for the work they produce.

You may think they're overcharging -- and that's your right -- but it's not your business to take something that's not yours.

And nowadays, with youtube and amazon, if authors/creators don't want to use an intermediary, they have plenty of options to do so. So the price they set is what they think they're worth.

People playing the pronoun game.

I've been re-watching Person of Interest and in one episode a CIA agent, who's been kidnapped and put in a cellphone controlled bomb vest by a former asset of his, lures one of the secondary good guy characters to a specific place where his crazy former asset can't her them. He does it specifically so he can give the SGGC a warning to pass along to a MC, because the crazy former asset was MC's former partner and is out to get him as well.

But instead of going "Tell John that Kara is alive. She put me in this and is out for him too" he is saying some vague crap about how ~she~ is back and ~she~ is planning something big. Even more ridiculous, the audience saw the kidnapping AND crazy former asset was revealed in this scene, so the audience knew what was going on and who he was talking about. But nope, a trained CIA agent whose life is on the line and who knows he only has a few moments will make his warning as vague and useless as possible.

Yeah, I don't mind them saying the person's name. It's WHEN they say it that bugs me. It's only ever to set up a foot-chase, and I can't see any rational person doing this - certainly not doing it the many times it happens over the life of a show.

And if they bought the book when they could afford it? And then they bought all the other stuff?

Sometimes money is so tight that getting into something and knowing that you like it enough to support the artist/buy their other work is barred simply because they can't know if the $20 in grocery money they're about to spend on entertainment is going to be money well spent or pissed away.

BWAHAHA!

Okay, then, this non-fan will keep spending part-time job type hours translating a Japanese show from the 1980's because she's such a non-fan.

AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME! Neener.

Re: How much do you torrent?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-08-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not all that often, but if I can't find or watch something other ways I'll attempt it. (Which doesn't always work anyway.) Or if I've already bought a Blu-Ray I'll torrent it to keep and possibly make icons from. (They always come with downloadable copies I don't or can't use anyway.)

It sucks when you want to watch something but it isn't even available to buy! (Like, I can buy a DVD set...that won't play in anything I own.)

If I can't find something through legal means I'm going to watch it on some sketchy website with tons of annoying ads, or just torrent so I can avoid that.

If you pay for it, I don't have an issue.

It's people who act like books/movies/tv shows/video games should be theirs just because they want it that I have an issue with.

Well, "a word from our sponsor" is kind of a different thing from ad banners and Youtube commercials. I was just saying the reason podcasts and vloggers have had to resort to that is because of how bad the ads arms race has gotten.

Did it effect the outcome (him being so vague)? Like was the MC confused when he got the message?

I don't care if I can stop you. It's not my stuff you're into.

I just don't consider you a fan.

I don't see why my opinion matters to you.

That's a reasonable stance to take, IMO. It's just that the way you worded it suggested that people who torrent, EVER, even if they buy the stuff later, CAN NEVA B TR00 FANS!!!!!1111two

And that's why this thread's kind of blown up a bit. You could stand to have been more clear.

Nobody likes being told they're not 'really' something because opinion, and you don't really seem to understand how tight money can be for some people or how precarious/difficult a situation they might be in.

If you're paying the creator then I think that's fine.

But it sticks in my craw that someone could legitimately think that they deserve to take something that people have invested hundreds/thousands of hours into just because they want it.

That's insulting. That doesn't make you a fan.

And I don't feel poverty is an excuse precisely because so much free media is readily available online. And if you don't have the internet, you're not gonna be pirating/torrenting anyway.

You're just repeating yourself at this point. We've already been over this. The proper response is "yes, you're right, I could have been more clear and stated more explicitly that it's one thing to pirate and then support the artist later, it's another thing to pirate with no intention of ever paying for it, and the way I have expressed myself throughout this entire thread has shown a lack of empathy or an ability to explain my arguments clearly."

Okay but let's be real, knowing F!S's knee-jerk reaction to anything SJW, I'm probably not that far off.
