People will call any number, email any email address, look for twitter and facebook handles that appear on TV.

I idly watched a video of "107 Facts About Steven Universe" and it mentioned that after the Keystone Motel episode, people found a real motel with the name "Keystone" and left reviews on Google referencing the SU episode.

It's no wonder to USA set aside a whole section of phone numbers just for showbiz.

That's because there's a set-aside series of stock numbers that can be called so that no one's actually getting a ring-up.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed with all of this. Fandom used to be fun, but now it's like a minefield.

Soapbox Sadie characters that the narrative treats as always right.

I mean seriously your female character is an outspoken opinionated person. That doesn't mean she's going to always be right and noble. Especially if she's like 14. I can tell you that I and a lot of people I know were kinda irrational at times and believed stupid shit when we were 14.

Also my experience on Tumblr has taught me that the outspoken opinionated teenager who knows all the buzzwords can just as easily be wrong and not truly know what they're talking about.

Also I've encountered quite a few characters like this who got to Mary Sue levels of "moral righteousness".

Re: This may ruin your memories even more, OP, if I'm right. Feel free to ignore.

Anon is talking about the IRL person on whom the movie is based.

Yea! I saw a post on tumblr from Eggsy's interrogation scene and the papers say he's 23. That is definitely of age; even if you have an issue with the huge age difference or power imbalance (Which, fair enough) it doesn't make Harry some awful sleeze or Eggsy some baby.

Plus, he met young Eggsy for like two minutes... Not exactly long enough for him to get attached or have trouble shaking the mental image.

Maybe it's because of some of the fanart of young Eggsy and Harry? I've never seen any sexual stuff (thank god), but there is some fluffy fanart of the two. I doubt the people who draw it are shippers, but anything is possible. Still, if people have a problem with that... It isn't even canon, that's sections of the fandom.

Taron totes ships it. He's said Eggsy and Harry have a father/son mentor relationship a few times but I've also seen him give an interviewer the weirdest look for suggesting such a thing, and then there's the interview where he's asked about the breakfast scene and he implies that Harry/Eggsy isn't out of the question. At the very least he doesn't seem creeped out by the idea.

I honestly can't believe the animated film got away with existing!

People go on about how those terrible Italian cartoons about the sinking of the Titanic, one of which claims the people never died at all, are so insulting to the real tragedy. Yet no one bats an eye about a movie about a poor little girl who was shot along with her whole family apparently being alive after all, along with the rather harmless Rasputin being made into a demon who apparently caused the entire revolution, and also there was a talking bat...But it's fine 'cause it's Don Bluth. :P

It's possible! If so that's an underhanded way of introducing her to people (And I don't know why they wouldn't just make a positive secret instead), but if it works... Good for her. She seems likable.

That is, frankly, horseshit

It's appealing and satisfying horseshit, but it's horseshit none the less

I do love their friendship: it's the thing I love most about them, actually. I just love that they love each other that much, and most of the fic I wrote for them was H/C. So I get you, OP. I just happened to write it romantic as well, because oh! my heart. :D

I imagine they would not have been pleased with that phase of covering their masterpieces with fig leaves.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's certainly possible! I fully admit that I haven't ever really gone searching out Mulder/Scully fic, because as previously mentioned I don't ship it, so this is my impression based off whatever fics I happen to have run into. It's definitely possible I've just never found the good stuff.

I wonder how much of it is true separation and how much is lack of fandom leaders.

On LJ and dA and forums and mailing lists you'd have mods and owners and if they didn't agree with harassment then it made it harder and riskier. Sure there was a chance they'd look the other war or support it, but you had relatively respected and powerful voices going "No, don't do this" and if they were found out there were consequences. You get caught harassing an artist you hate, you could find yourself suspended or banned in your forums and cut off from friends and supporters.

Now it's a lot more open and unstructured. John Green goes "This teenage girl said mean things to me, but pls don't doxx or tell her to kill herself" and... what's he going to do if they do harass her? He doesn't have an easy way to see if they do, to hold them accountable, to actually individually punish the behavior. He doesn't actually have any tumblr power beyond what people chose or don't chose to give him.

There's no higher fannish authority anymore, the only way to promote or punish is with a mob of screaming voices. (That's why gamergate got so angry when people started coming up with scripts to autoblock pro-gamergate accounts. It effectively took away their only weapon.) And that sort of environment breeds bad behavior.

And that's why absolute monarchy is the only sustainable system in Internet communities

Novel-length Cartinelli royalty AU.

Where, like, Peggy is a really determined, intelligent, responsible, somewhat wayward princess, and Angie is like... some kind of merchant or merchant's daughter or something, and they have to foil a plot by some dastardly noble, and also fall in love really really slowly, with lots of adventure and romantic tension and supporting each other through times of trouble, and also cuddling

That's why I love that Adblock plus now has an option to allow non-intrusive (? no idea how it's worded in English) ads.
Because I'm not facing pop-ups, auto plays and malware without an ad blocker, but I'm also aware that free content needs ads.
(Now if only youtube would stop showing me the same spot 20 times in a row I'd be a lot happier...)

Again, I blame Bush for that. More eloquently explained here: http://postcardsfromspace.tumblr.com/post/127028876533/taikonaut-medusamori-terrasigillata

Re: Relationship Question

As someone who loves insects and thinks most of them are beautiful, I agree. I've thought more than once about getting a wasp tattoo, as trompe l'oeil-ish as possible.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're conflating two very different things. Drag humor where the only joke is "Hey look, a man in women's clothing! How hilarious!" is, yes, outdated and in bad taste. However, drag humor where actors in drag are playing characters and the humor derives from the characters, like David Mitchell's spot-on impression of Mrs. Danvers, or most of the Kids In The Hall's work... that's fine in my book.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The announcement of new genes and colors on Flight Rising. I know it's silly to get so happy over pixel dragons but it makes me smile!

Re: Relationship Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But there isn't a way to compromise on this, at least not if "compromise" means both give in a little and get some of what they want. There's no way to spin this except "This tattoo that you want is a dealbreaker for me and you are a terrible person if you get it."

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. There's even some in this thread.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
A semi-democratic council with a leader seems to be the best model for long term for larger fandoms. Just because fandon may have its high times and low times, but it's generally a 24/7 thing and no human can sustain that kind of constant vigilance and enforcement

Because otherwise the moment the monarch steps away, the trolls will play. Or even just discussion that would normally get nipped "Labs are better than Retrievers." "No, retrievers are better because my saintly dead mother had one and are you saying she was wrong?" "People who own retrievers are pedophiles, end of story" and suddenly everyone's worked up and screaming.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes perfect sense, I can see how that would be appealing and easy to do for Starsky and Hutch. I think my thing with this specific pairing is that the "romantic as well" aspect feels sort of distracting or cluttering, and not at all "oh! my heart" when I'm focusing way more on, well, anything and everything else. (But not enough that it would stop me from reading a really good slash fic, though!)

Now that I'm thinking about it and reading all these great comments, I think it has something to do with how I usually ship in other fandoms. In my other fandoms' slash ships, a lot of my interest is on how the romantic relationship makes them different and more interesting than canon, so there was no such thing as a fic that "just happened" to be slash. The slash was always significantly different from the gen in a way that really compelled me, and I think that's where my interest in slash lay. This is the first "epic friendship" fandom I've been in where adding slash didn't change the characters in a way that held any interest for me.
