Heroic Sacrifice scenes in kids' media

What are some favorite examples of heroic sacrifices that occur in books/shows/movies/etc meant for kids? (Or at least very family-friendly works)?

That last one. I love those movies so much.

In Superman: The Animated Series, Bizarro sacrifices himself so that Superman can save Lois Lane. It is especially tear-jerking in context, since the episode is all about Bizarro (a clone programmed to believe he's Superman) having a meltdown over being told his memories of being Superman are implanted and generally fucking up horribly in his attempt to prove he is SO Superman -- and one of the things that he does throughout the episode in a really sincere but creepy-incompetent way is express the fact that he is in love with Lois. It's played as a joke throughout the episode, then subverted with the ending, where he realizes he's not Superman, but his love for Lois and his impulse to save people is still there.

There's that episode of Yu-Gi-Oh where Joey is brainwashed and forced to duel Yugi while booby trapped so that the loser dies, and they both sacrifice themselves to save the other, one right after the other. I remember the animation for that scene being pretty damn chilling.

OMG I haven't watched that show in about a decade and I can still remember exactly what that scene looked like down to the details.

Oh yes, that scene. All the various expressions on their faces...I only have a gif of the first part though: http://chicaries.tumblr.com/post/36654740176

HNGH good choice anon

I mean the dub could pretend people didn't die or get maimed left and right, but that one was pretty damn obvious no matter which language you saw it in. They couldn't hide it, someone was supposed to die.

The very first memory that came to mind was Gurgi in The Black Cauldron. Make of that what you will.

In the movie version.

My first thought was Ellidyr (sp?) in the book version of The Black Cauldron.

All Dogs Go To Heaven: Charlie letting the watch he stole from heaven that needs to keep ticking for him to stay alive sink to the bottom of the river, and saving Anne Marie from drowning instead.

This is why I never forgot, even as a little kid, that watches are not waterproof and was always very careful with them.
