Gergh, the hate for this poster is understandable, but I don't think it's justified. I mean, she acknowledged that it's a bitchy thing to think. And it is.

But I kind of agree. I mean, less so with fandom because you never see anyone's face, but I don't want to be put in the same category as either the a) crazy screaming fangirls or b) ugly fat cosplayers that go to cons. It's not hate for any specific person, but I hate the stereotype and people that propagate it. They DO make us look bad!

In general I think people here are way too hard on secrets like this. Did you ever wonder WHY it's a secret? I think it's better that a person can admit their prejudices/flaws and even post anonymously about them than not be aware and end up the worse for it. Not everyone is morally sparkling clean. Just because the OP is being judgemental (and I suppose I am, too) doesn't make it okay for you to judge her right back.

PS - Who died and gave you or her the right to determine whether someone was worthy of being in your fandom simply by the way they look or act? If you don't like crazy fatties associated with you then you've got a long, hard life ahead of you. Last I checked, everybody was a human.

PPS - lol at people that don't want to be associated with crazy fatties and then join RPG/anime/manga fandoms. That's like saying "no nerds in my D&D/Warhammer fandom GAWD".

So in other words, it's okay for me to say anything without repercussions as long as I warn that it's 'bitchy'? In that case: I acknowledge that it's bitchy for me to wank about #67. OMG YOU CAN'T JUDGE ME NOW!

That said, while I agree there's a need for greater dialog on this issue...sorry, part of that dialog is going to be a lot of people raking said secret over the coals. This IS a controversial viewpoint, and by posting it you get exposed to the vast number of people who find it bullshit. That's part of how prejudice is stomped out -- when it is no longer tolerated. I don't like it when people in fandom turn against 'pretty' people (I've seen it happen); I don't like it when people go after the 'fatties' or 'uglies' either. So I'm 'hard' on secrets like this, because I feel that's one way in which I can give that strong social feedback...because I don't want to live in a world where 'ugly' people have no place on the internet, for fuck's sake. We can't even see each other!

And in general? The idea that you should hate someone because OH MY GOD THEY MAKE ME LOOK BAD...well, welcome to humanity. All stereotypes/overgeneralizations wind up having exceptions, and you have to learn how to be an exception.

See, the original secret didn't bother me, because it's some silly, vain teenager being silly and vain. Yeah, her secret sucked, but I think the commenters are being a lot worse than an immature message that boils down to "I have low self-esteem and don't like to be associated with ugly people."

...that and saying things like this (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/126927.html?thread=34236623#t34236623) so viciously to a 15 year old kind of disturbs me. A lot.

So what you're saying is "how dare you not tolerate my intolerance!" If you say stupid shit, you're going to get called on it. And you want a pat on the back for recognising that you're being judgmental? Come on.

The real issue is why do you care what people look like? As long as they're having fun and not hurting anyone, who cares?
