Watership Down

Should I read it? I read and loved the Dorset Squirrels/Woodstock saga.

This is one of those questions where the answer is always going to be yes. Everyone should read this book.

I loved Watership Down. I've never read the other books you mentioned, but Watership Down was a great study on governments and leadership styles!

It's not a bad book, but "heavy-handedly moralistic" would be the nice way to describe it. Imagine a children's book only written at an adult reader level. The writing is more complex but the ideas aren't really.

Yes, its quite good. However, I tried reading The Plague Dogs afterwards and couldn't get into it.

It was my absolute favorite book when I was maybe 11/12 and re-read it several times in the span of a couple years. I haven't read it since, though. A lot of people say it's really dark but I don't remember it being too bad in that respect. I was scared of everything as a kid, but loved tgat book.

Knew a guy who used to make his sister and her friends cry by singing "Bright Eyes" from the animated adaptation of that book.

Anyway yes read it ASAP.

Oh, without question. To address a previous comment, I wouldn't call it so heavy handed that you can't enjoy it as a story. It's something I skimmed over or missed when I was younger that I appreciate more as an adult.

I loved it. Yeah there were dark bits but also very atmospheric re English countryside, and a good adventure story.

Watership Down is a great novel. But like Tolkien, Adams will get caught up in descriptive detail and tangents about linguistics. Rabbit linguistics! I don't mind it, but for me both are definitely something I really have to be in the mood to read. But I will say, my favorite thing about Watership Down isn't really the journey (although it is excellent), it is the examination of rabbit culture that is so engrossing.

it's worth the experience, but I didn't really love it. the characters felt a bit wooden to me, although I was very moved by the development at the end.

don't hype yourself up too much, then you'll appreciate it for what it does.

Yes. I have loved Watership Down for decades, and re-read it every year. Go for it!
