The separation between comic/manga is the absolutely dumbest thing and I can't believe people still hold it up. Marketing's a bitch.

As someone who has both on her shelf, I kind of understand using one word or the other in conversation for the purpose of identifying country of origin, but I don't understand it in book stores or libraries, or when it's used to make one seem 'better'/'cooler' than the other for whatever reason.

On the one hand, I agree, on the other hand it'd be nice if manga would diversify a tad more in style.

I think that diversity is out there, but of that already relatively small number of manga with a distinctive style that actually gets picked up for English/US distribution, fewer still are easy to pick out among multiple-volume juggernauts with more popular or expected styles. I sometimes wish stores shelved manga by publisher/publisher line more often for that reason.

Eh, as someone who likes both, there are significant differences in both storytelling and art styles between the two. I wouldn't automatically recommend comics to someone who liked manga or vice versa because there's a good chance they might NOT enjoy the style of the other.
