I agree with you about Ame. I think his choice would have come off as more valid for me if they hadn't shoehorned Yuki into the opposite one, you know? Because it's not that the choices themselves are invalid, it's just the way it played out.
And yeah, Yuki was totally ooc. The annoying thing is that I wish the ending for her would have been to realize that she can "fit in" on the surface, without sacrificing everything. Or just understanding that both of these are valid aspects of her.

I felt so sad for the mother. You're right, she really did try so hard!

yeah, it was especially disappointing because Hana was a cool character, who didn't seem to fall into the traps of a "mom" character. I absolutely adored the younger Yuki as well.
Why couldn't both children grow into their strength, instead of this sexist scheme again?

If anything, her mother should have been an example to her- she fit into the community, but she never forced her children to be human. Ok, she kinda enabled this highschool boy... (bitter resentment!). It seemed like a very obvious arc, but maybe that's a different cultural reading.
