Re: Unpopular Opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)For example, Han Chinese is certainly a group of people who do share a similar genetic base. If someone "trans racial" wanted to be Chinese, they wouldn't want to be "Asian" they would want to be "Han Chinese" because Asian also covers, for example, people from India.
"Asian" is the construct, but "Han Chinese" is a certain, concrete set of genetic traits and factors, like sex.
Re: Unpopular Opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)To the point where it's pretty clear that some would have traits more similar to a white or black person than another Han Chinese person.
And, again, when you look at Africa, there is more genetic variability there than the rest of the world combined. And while you might look at an African American and perceive them as looking more similar to an African, in actuality, they're more genetically similar to a European American.
Thus, although I was using broader "categories" (white, black, Latino, Asian) my overall point is that I don't see why it's our business to tell people they can't identify with a different race than the one they were assigned.
Re: Unpopular Opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)Some trans people go through with surgery and do everything they can to change their bodies because they have dysphoria about their physical sex, some are happy doing the minimal transition necessary to live life as their preferred gender identity even if they don't have hormone therapy or surgical reassignment, since it was the gender identity that was their priority.
I would think a white person who was dysphoric about their light skin as more like the former type of person, and a white person who wanted to identify culturally as black as more like the latter type of person. How valid is it? I can't tell you and I haven't tried.
