Re: "Don't teach me not to get raped, teach men not to rape"

Ugh. I see this all the time and it's not particularly helpful to a discourse about rape.

The idea that men are predators and women are victims is something that normalises the rape of women in itself, and stigmatises when who are victims of this sort of attack. Especially if the perpetrator of a women.

Aside from that, how are you supposed to teach someone to not be a rapist? They don't accidentally rape people. And I think even the ones who rape people who are clearly too drunk to consent know that it's wrong, they just also know that the victim will be denounced for being drunk and that they're likely to get away with it.

They don't accidentally rape people.

It is actually quite possible to "accidentally rape someone" if you don't understand consent.

I'm not sure that's true. I could be wrong, of course. I think they're perfectly aware of what an evil thing they're doing, and all the insistence that it was consensual comes later when they're trying to either rationalise their behaviour or to lay down a defence if the case goes to court.

Yah, it's a myth that rapists always know that they are rapists. That they're these bogeymen who lurk down alleyways. That they're inherently monsters driven by base psychopathic biological needs and all we can do is tell women to avoid alleyways. In fact rapists are all around us, and are people we know.

Our society teaches some pretty shit things about consent, and especially the way men are taught, and women are taught, means that a bunch of men think they're entitled to sex from women.
