DA

No horse in this fight but "against the law = wrong" isn't a good way to argue

Gay marriage was against the law until two months ago. Laws often have nothing to do with morality

It's more the idea of:

"I'm entitled to take something that doesn't belong to me just because I want it." that I find morally wrong.

Yeah, I was only pointing out that adding the against the law in that sentence was taking a sort of false spin on it, because that has nothing to do with making it more or less morally correct.

Back before the internet, I got my films and media from the library.
I never paid for any of it.
If I liked it, I fucking copied the VHS and kept a tape. I taped stuff from TV, too.
Technically, this was illegal, I suppose.

Almost everybody I knew did it that way.
We also recorded songs from the radio to cassette tapes.
Also illegal.

Also, I still photocopy books I can't afford but need a copy of longer than the library will let me have it. (Hell, there's a photocopier IN THE LIBRARY.) This is also illegal.

Guess what? I'd lend all this shit to anybody who wanted it. They could make their own copies.

Why was this not a huge social issue then?

BECAUSE THE COMPANIES COULD NOT TELL IT WAS HAPPENING AND HAD NO WAY OF TELLING HOW PREVALENT IT WAS. We weren't on anybody's radar as "lost potential revenue". I seriously doubt that publishers and producers and artists are making less than they did back when it was all physical.

Actually there was lots of fuss over people recording off the radio/copying vcrs and that this is killing entertainment!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Taping_Is_Killing_Music

So torrenting is basically a rehash of it.

(Check out all the see also's)

Fascinating reading! One if the wiki articles somewhere does a timeline of piracy concerns over history!
