I thought that too, but then they actually got Sanders to be more explicit and detailed about his plans for dealing with racial injustice. Plus they made Sanders look like a victim, so they boosted his popularity with the public. It still seems a bit slash-and-burn for my tastes, but I guess it technically worked.
