I'm not saying nobody should be careful. I'm not saying that any of the advise people give in this issue is bad advise either. All I'm saying is that "teaching people to avoid rape" is, at best, playing a bit of statistics poker. Are your odds better? Probably. Are you safer? Maybe. Will it actively "prevent" anything? No.

Should people take steps to try and be as safe as possible? Obviously, yes.
Should people assume that anyone who follows these steps will be safe? NO.
Should people believe anything will prevent rapists all of the time? No.
Should people assume victims of rape could have stopped their assault? No.
Should the onus of 'preventing rape' be put on its potential victims? No, not any more than victims of any other crime can be expected to 'protect themselves'.

I don't have a problem with "teach people to take steps to be more safe". I have a HUGE problem (obviously) with the phrase "teach women to prevent rape". Again, I have (as I said) a certain lack of objectivity here. I have a HUGE problem with people interpreting what happened to me as failure on my part. I can only imagine what victims go through who can't answer the "but why didn't you do X" questions with, "I FUCKING DID AND IT DIDN'T HELP." So yes, I have a huge kneejerk reaction to "women should be taught to avoid rape".
