Ostensibly popular but in practice, people use this excuse a LOT.

I see this a lot in the way abusive men are excused by women bearing its brunt, that they were terribly hurt in the past and are just lashing out.

I also see this in the way women treat other women, that when they convince themselves they are the victim here (usually when they've suffered abuse in the past), all gloves are off.
