Asking author question about a fic - what is the ettiquette?

I recently discovered a WIP on AO3 and am wondering if asking the author if they intend on finishing it is something that's frowned upon.

It's fantastic, and I'm perfectly content with the way the last chapter ended, if it turns out to be the end of the fic. But it says X/? which makes me think it's supposed to continue, though it hasn't been updated in a long time.

I don't know if it's even possible (other than asking in a comment, maybe?) but I thought of somehow messaging them to ask if they plan on continuing it. I know writers hate to be bugged about updating WIPs and I don't want to bother them but would a one time question along the lines of "Hey, I really loved this fic and noticed it wasn't marked as complete, I was just curious if you planned on adding more to it?" be something that's discouraged?

I know I'm posting at a weird time here so I don't know if anyone will even see this, but I'm curious...

I think that hypothetical message you have here sounds perfectly reasonable!
