[Fire Emblem: Awakening]

Agreed, I didn't think the kids were necessary at all. I mean, seeing the kids was kind of interesting but overall just weird and didn't add anything to me. (plus the mechanic killed any possibility for gay relationships, which sucks!)

I liked the kids well enough, but I did feel bad that they made my gen 1 characters seem pointless. I almost wished their kids had just replaced them, since that's what ended up happening with my team anyway.

But you're so right about the OOC. I felt good about most of my parent couples when I picked them, but seeing some of the interactions between kids and fathers I was really mad about a few. I know they had a lot of interactions to write already, but not changing conversations to match the fathers better made some of them really cringey.

If it helps at all, the kids and their fathers did get unique supports in the Future Past DLC.

yeah, some of the father conversations weren't that great. I mean, there's a few gems that you'll get (Vaike as Owain's dad is perfect for instance) but others just make little sense (Henry can't remove a hex from Noire? Wat).

That DLC did alleviate some of that, but some still felt OOC. And Morrigan fails to get a unique convo with his/her father/mother.

Yeah, a few weren't so bad. But I had Libra as Noire's dad, and I haaaated it. There were others I really didn't like but I can't remember now.

I didn't even know about that DLC! Can't say I care enough to go back for it, but at least they did make an effort.

Anyone who got to be Nah's dad always drew the short straw on the convos. Ultra creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that always bothered me. The fathers never mattered except passing his hair color down.

"I almost wished their kids had just replaced them"

You should play Fire Emblem 4!

The kids levelled up so quickly in battle that there was no point in using their parents after they appeared. That was a little annoying.

I grew to like both generations, but it's not nice to be pushed in a certain direction so bluntly by a game, and made to ignore your existing favourite characters.

Yeah, I love some of the kids as stand-alone characters, but their supports with their parents or not factoring in who their father was makes some of it OOC as hell. And then there's Severa who is just a massively over-the-top angry bitch for no reason whatsoever and no matter what parents she has. Which as someone who was pretty excited about who I had as her parents really ticked me off.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, honestly I didn't like Severa because of how over the top she is. I thought that if I made Libra her dad things would be different but nope! Still a angry and annoying.

She was a textbook tsundere. She acted like that because Cordelia was an amazing person and she felt insecure about not being able to live up to that standard. She acted like a spoiled brat with her dad but both Cordelia and father supports gives her character development.

I love a lot of textbook tsunderes and she never came across that well-written to me. Like I can see where they were trying to write her tsundere, but outside a few supports she just comes across rude and mean. And given that Cordelia's not exactly a hugely egotistical character (if anything, she's got self-esteem issues depending on which male supports you go into), having her daughter be the one with the "not living up to my parent" issue seems a strange writing choice. I mean, when your mother is literally admitting she's settling with her choice in husbands because Chrom will never chose her, it's hard to envision her child growing up with a personality like this. If anything, I'd see her as more distant and withdrawn and quiet because I doubt her parent's relationship was that great.

I like that you get to pick what couples get together and I liked experimenting with different hair colors. Also the kids were way more useful than their parents in battle since they could inherit Galeforce. Lucina and Cynthia as sisters made an unbeatable team for me. Actually any combo of two Galeforce users makes quick work of any battle.

Also I love their interactions together. Owain and Ingo, Severa with Noire and Kjelle. I love Noire split personality and how Brady looks like a thug but is a total mama's boy. Gerome is legit Batman.

What is not to love about the second gen? Unless you just don't like the time travel aspect, which I kinda understand.
