Re: A lot of anons today...

I have a name but it's been, like, 2 months since I logged in

Just not worth the hassle, kinda

The hassle of logging in, or the hassle of dealing with replies in your inbox, or grudewankers, or?

For me, I used to have a logged in name, but I don't really have a consistent identity or point of view and I feel more freedom to say whatever as anon (I'm not an asshole though, honest).

Yeah, mostly the hassle of having an identity - not grudgewankers, but I just feel like I'm a lot more guarded about what I say when I'm under a name. I can just say shit.

Not an asshole either. It's just... it is what it is.

I was going to ask about what you mean by not having a consistent identity, but I guess I get it. If you're named and you say two things that people feel like they don't go together they might call you on it. Some people wouldn't want to deal with that.

Personally I think everyone could use some reminders that people are complex. I hate the idea that, for example, you can tell someone's political party based on their stance on a single issue. You could make a good guess but I don't like the idea that it's inherently inconsistent for them to not toe the party line in all things. It may not be consistent to another person's framework of ideas but it can still be consistent to theirs.

It's also kind of stylistic - like, when I was posting under a name, I would think a lot about how I was posting, how I was writing things, the kind of jokes I was making, the kind of impression that I wanted to give off. How I presented, basically.

Of course a lot of that is because I'm a weird nervous wreck w/ social anxiety. But still, it does make it easier if you don't have to think about that stuff at all.

I could see that. I sometimes tell my friends "I just thought of a joke but it's not really me at all".

Around here I've just kind of embraced that I can't control how other people will see me so there's no point in trying too hard to influence it. What comes across as intelligent and insightful to someone may look pretentious to someone else. What seems sweet to someone may seem insincere to someone else. And so on.

Me too. That or I'd feel weird leaving one-line comments or just agreeing with someone.
