Both depending on the character. Or neither. Different things draw me to a character. Sometimes it is attraction. Sometimes I see a bit of myself in them. Sometimes I'd love to be them. And sometimes they are just interesting.

does it skew in any one direction more than the others, or random?

It is mostly random. And who is my current absolute favorite of the moment changes over time. Right now it's Celebrimbor who I neither want to be (holy crap does his life suck) or want to be with.

70% of them I'd want to be with, 30% I'd want to be

I don't want to handle the responsibilities of being a super soldier whose job it is to continuously save the world. I'll just stay home in the middle of a farm and bake cookies.

And considering my favorite characters, that is how most of my choices would go.

I think they often have traits that I admire so I'd say I skew towards the first one. Sometimes it's neither though. Sometimes they're just entertaining to watch even though I'd hate to be around them in real life.

I agree that they often have traits that I admire, but that doesn't really resolve things for me: I want to be with people who have those traits as much as I want to have those traits myself.

Yeah I thought of that after I posted my comment. I must have some other reason for thinking I gravitate toward people I want to be. I wonder what it is...

Most of my favorite characters are people I'm pretty sure I'd be terrified of, or at least extremely uncomfortable around in I knew them in real life.

My favorite characters are me exaggerated, so.

Lol. Obviously I want to fuck them, but not be in a relationship with them. I would only be in relationships with my secondary faves, because they are the ones that typically support my faves.

There are a few exceptions, of course.

I mean, I do have a subset of favorites who are definitely fuckable and only there for the eye candy, but in terms of characters I enjoy on the whole, I just enjoy their entire character and it has zero to do with me or my relationship to them.

Neither. They're usually just people I enjoy watching in action. I don't usually connect characters to myself at all.

Usually a mix of these, but lately is has been the last one.

First one because I want to explore what their life is like and do what they do in fic. For example, I enjoy being contrary and don't like rules so my favorites tend to be like that... I'd like to save people and not be the one who's saved. So if you take, say, Robin Hood, I'd like to be him rather than with him.

Both, although I also have favorite character who fit neither category, i.e. I want to be friends with them or they are kids or they are dispicable.

Definitely more the former. I like chars I'd like to be with (duh), but they don't become my favourites. No, they have to be super cool in some way that I'd wish I was.
