the video game thread

Hey, guys, what're you playing lately? I've got Fallout 2 going, but as always it takes a while to get good. (Bit like New Vegas that way.) It's still fun, though.

Speaking of, I have some good news for those of you without Steam accounts -- Bethesda is on GoG now, and that means the return of Classic Fallout (which disappeared from the storefront after a rights battle a couple years ago) as well as the arrival of Quake 1 and both expansions, Classic Doom (everything except No Rest For The Living) and even the older Elder Scrolls games up to and including Morrowind (if you're into that sort of thing.) So if you'd been wanting to play those, now's as good a time as any!

Also in classic gaming news, Turok 1 and 2 are getting remastered PC ports by Night Dive Studios.

Night Dive Studios are known for their re-release of System Shock 2 a while back, and they'll potentially be re-releasing System Shock 1, much to the consternation of some of the crustier elements of the fandom. It'll be cool to finally be able to introduce that one to people.

I have a pattern of starting a game that looks fun, giving up halfway through because it's obnoxious and frustrating, finding it a year later and thinking it looks fun, dumping it again halfway through, finding it a year after that . . . This time, I want to beat them once and for all so I can forget about them.

I finished Etrian Odyssey this time, but Bravely Default bored me so thoroughly that I just couldn't go on. Now I'm more than halfway through Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (which is actually fun, just incredibly long and easy to forget what the hell you're doing if you're interrupted for a day or two.) Wish me luck!

I'm the same way with most RPGs that aren't Fallout or otherwise action RPGs. I've bounced off EO so much ahah, I love the idea, I love the look of it, but goddamn that thing is a slog and I always lose interest.

Have fun with FFTA2 :) I vaguely remember playing the original FFTA and liking it (but, as always, never getting far.)

Attempting a hundred-percent run of Okami. Not expecting to make it; I love the game but there are a couple sidequests that just make me want to throw things.

I've kind of hit a bit of burnout on the core game mechanic of most RPGs, which boils down to "kill everything from spawn point to goal in order to read dialogue/see a cut scene." So lately it's been Euro Truck Simulator 2, and considering wrapping up Pillars of Eternity and Shadowrun: HK just because I'm somewhat invested in it. I also have Flight Simulator, Steam Edition but spent the last session cussing out my instructor, and I've not made time to figure out the Cessna.

Complicating this is I'm considering a move back to Linux if I'm just not going to do AAA RPGs anymore.

I'm looking forward to playing Shadowrun. I have all 3 of the Returns series but I haven't played -- I plan to do that next month.

I've often considered a move to a new OS myself, but I'm not sure I want to. I was debating getting a Macbook, though.

Shadowrun is good. It's very much of a stack the deck against the RNG system though if that's not your thing.

I'm back into incremental Fraknensteins on my hardware, and most of what I do for a hobby prefers a unix toolchain anyway. OS X is nice at work, but I think hardware quality has slipped in the last few years.

I've been playing FFXIV, since it's fun to level up in. GW2 (barely), Skyrim. I've been trying to get back into FFVI but I'm dumb and stuck in the very beginning part of the game. I have no clue where I'm supposed to go.

That's actually really awesome news. I just got GOG and started playing this old Windows DOS RPG I could never beat as a kid. Loving it so far.

Dude, I'm excited for Turok never played it as a kid, but it always looked really fun. Totally downloading it when I have the inclination.

My boyfriend and I just played through Contradiction. It's a murder mystery. "Contradiction is an interactive crime drama game that uses live-action video for the entirety of the game play." I'd estimate that it took us about five or six hours to play. I liked it very well.
