Giving kudos to WIPs

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you do that or do you wait till the fic is finished, just in case it ends horribly?

I always wait for a WIP to finish before reading it in the first place, so.

Can't kudos be given to individual chapters?

No.

the fic can be kudoed only once, but comments can be left on as many individual chapters as you like.

If I like what I've read so far, I give kudos.

No, I give kudos as soon as I like the fic and finish what's available now

I give kudos straight away if I like what's available, to encourage the writer.

It's not as though kudos are some kind of rare commodity that you only have so many of to give away.

No, but depending on how many people leave kudos after you, your name could be prominently attached to a fic for a while. Which sucks if the fic turns to shit and you left kudos beforehand.

Give

Sometimes I give kudos just because, even if I drop the fic

I won't even read WIPs anymore tbh. I've had too many I love get abandoned.

Vicious cycle, that. If there doesn't seem to be any interest in the fic the author can think it's not worth writing/posting the rest.

I like to encourage WiPs to get finished, so sometimes I wait until there seems to be a lull in updates (without warning or expanation) and leave a kudo then. If I'm really impressed, I leave a kudo right away (or whenever I get done with the latest chapter posted so far).

Yes, I do, sometimes, if I like it enough, and think of it, but I do also like to wait until a fic is finished, just to make the kudos a reward, however small, for finishing.

I usually give kudos to WIPs anonymously and only give logged-in kudos to finished stories that stayed great until the end (though there are exceptions).
Sometimes, when a WIP I liked a lot hasn't been updated for a while, I give anonymous kudos in the hope that the author might see it and remember continuing it - I think it's a better, less nagging way to do it than to write a comment that would only put pressure on the author.
