I don't think the quote was ever intended to be necessarily true, just artistic hyperbole. Like when people use the word "literally" to describe something figuratively. It actually means "loneliness can breed kindness, etc" but that's not as evocative.

But you can see that it can be true when you're presented with actual specific examples of actual characters. Like, the meme improves upon the quote by making it a case-by-case basis rather than a blanket claim. Of course, sometimes people pick characters that don't really fit at all, in which case it doesn't work.
