Me too. I'd been warned going in what was going to happen, so I wound up watching the finale on double speed, just so I could complete the series but not have the ending really "register".

If I ever write Enterprise fic, I will consider that episode non-canon.

Or just "the holonovel writers in the 24th century got it wrong", since it was literally just Riker on the holodeck. I mean, that's how the books handled it. :P

There's also Section 31 who could easily have altered the real records and buried the truths. It's Star Trek. It isn't hard to find ways to manipulate the narrative to serve one's own purposes.

Yeah, it's not even a real Enterprise episode, just a years-late TNG Riker holodeck episode. Kind of a bizarre way to end a series, and that's not even getting into the actual flaws of the storytelling in that last episode.
