This is almost certainly Free! -- there was a mook (magazine + book) centered around MakoHaru released in June, then a RinHaru one released in July.

I am a MakoHaru shipper who doesn't really dig RinHaru, and even though I have RH friends and try my best to get along with RH shippers in general -- some of them are unbelievably nasty to MH shippers. I recently had to unfollow someone who was essentially stating that MH shippers are idiots who lack reading comprehension, whose ship is just about baseless (apparently it is based on 'one line from one episode'; I am guessing they meant "it's meaningless without you" -- and, uh, no?), and who only ship MH because they lust after Makoto.

Free! fandom is kind of a cesspit anyway, but why be that hostile and dismissive?

Ah, now it all makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up, anon! I'm kind of interested in what's in the MakoHaru book... Might Google that later.

I don't ship RinHaru either but I won't begrudge anyone else for doing so; that said, they should have the same approach. I've been in some of the “worst" fandoms around and honestly, even in those there are plenty of reasonable people. It's extremely unfortunate when you find yourself in a situation where you keep running into the assholes. (Or where the assholes speak the loudest.)

Like, simmer down, people liking a different ship then you is not worth getting that worked up about.

Hey hey, don't make it sound so one-sided. There's plenty of nastiness to go around - I've been a RinHaru shipper since the first episode a lot of MH shippers are extremely nasty to RH shippers too. I mean, a lot of people were laughing and rubbing it in our faces that we didn't get a mook (this was before it was announced.) And that's just one of the more recent things in a long, long series of MHs downplaying RH stuff and belittling everything we get.

Yes, it is definitely true that some MH shippers are nasty to RH shippers as well. I don't think what I said necessarily made it sound one-sided, though...? I just mentioned that some RH shippers go out of their way to be mean, but I certainly didn't mean to imply that it doesn't run the other way.

It's amazing how something as innocent and friendship oriented as Free! was able to create such a disgusting ship war.

I started out as MH and then later came to love RH just as much. Both are amazing and cute ships, yet every time there fanservice or is something like the mooks released then there is a wave of pettiness and hostility.

I s2g I keep hearing people calling Makoto emotionally manipulative and Rin an abusive friend and wtf. This fandom is ridiculous.

da

I'm not in the fandom at all, but thought the show was cute and sweet. And it seemed pretty obvious that both Haru/Makoto and Haru/Rin were heavily supported by canon. I know ship wars are a thing and will always be a thing, but it certainly seems like both sides are "right", so why fight about it.
