I can kind of understand this. It's like, if the "preferred" ship was going to be end game, maybe they should've put more effort toward it in canon. I can see why one would feel cheated, especially once you've gotten so invested in the other ship.

That would only make sense when the situation involves actual ships that could become canon, as opposed to figments of fans' imagination.

I'm giving OP the benefit of the doubt and assuming there is supporting evidence of the non-preferred ship in canon. Possibly enough that any fan would suspect it being end game, whether or not they prefer the ship themselves.

Since most people are assuming this is about Free! then there are no canon ships and every big relationship is handled equally, in my opinion. There are no actually canon ships, just fanservice.
