It does start to unravel, especially once we get out of the Romulan War duology and into the RotF series, as Trip starts to get pushed further and further out of the spy life. And Trip/T'Pol is still a huge thing in the books; it's almost a lifeline for Trip at this point, and it'll probably be what finally pulls him out of the spy life. Unfortunately, while the books could use the "it's just a holonovel" excuse for TATV, they do still have to keep a situation where the general populace thinks Trip's dead, so he'll never come entirely back into the light. But we do know that he still keeps in contact with his former crew to a degree even after he retires from spy life, thanks to a flash forward in an earlier book.
