Comparisons you don't get

What things have you seen compared (whether recently or back when they were big, however long ago that was) that you just don't get?

Twilight vs The Hunger Games.

THEY'RE NOT EVEN THE SAME GENRE.

Anon below you - wow, comment twins. :P

But yeah, I don't get it either. Katniss would eat Bella up, and not in a good way.

I knoooooowwwwwwww.

They're different stories, different genre, different everything but because the lead in each is a lady they get compared???? pft!

Ah, they're both involved in a love triangle! ...which still ignores everything else so I'll pft with you.

I lol at the Bella fans who get riled up and say "Well, once Bella becomes a vampire, she would totally beat up Katniss!"

I'm like... no shit. And if Katniss ever became a vampire by chance, I'd say the odds would be ever back in her favor.

Presumably the comparison isn't because of their content/style/genre but because The Hunger Games was the Big Teen Sensation that very much replaced Twilight

someone tried to get me to read the hunger games by telling me it was "just like twilight and harry potter!"

- Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, back when the LOTR movies were out and the books were big. I don't know why, but everyone was convinced they were one and the same. No. While I don't know if I'd call Harry Potter urban fantasy, it's certainly not high fantasy, and the stories were quite different. There were comparable elements, but they were hardly literary twins. More like literary second cousins who make awkward small talk at family reunions.

- The Hunger Games and Twilight, presumably because they're both trilogies with heroines. But THG is closer to sci fi than fantasy, and honestly, Katniss would make Bella cry.

Yup. Although, I think comparing anything to LOTR is questionable considering it kind of started high fantasy and yet most of high fantasy is actually nothing like it. But yes, Harry Potter is nothing like LOTR (I've also seen the LOTR and Star Wars comparisons a lot which also make no sense). The only thing they have in common is being fantasy, and it is such a broad genre that it makes no sense to compare them.

Actually, I think the best things to compare Harry Potter to aren't fantasy at all. I think they are British school fiction. Because Harry Potter is basically that but with magic.

AYRT - Good point about boarding school fiction. I haven't read much, but from what I know of it, it does fit.

LOTR and Star Wars is actually pretty logical because both are obvious variants on The Hero's Journey. My copy of The Hero with 1,000 Faces has Luke Skywalker on the cover.

Harry Potter and LOTR are both fantasy but they're entirely different categories of fantasy.

The Big Bang Theory vs. Community.

On some level I sort of get it, like, they're both shows that make a lot of geeky references, but other than that? Absolutely nothing in common. The styles of writing and humour are completely different. You can literally watch less than five minutes of each show and see just from that how utterly unlike each other they are.

I'm also under the impression that BBT kind of makes fun of geekery, whereas Community embraces it wholeheartedly (with the exception of the fourth season, which had writers who didn't really know what they were doing).

Re: Comparisons you don't get

(Anonymous) 2015-08-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Your impression is mostly accurate. BBT is a geek-bashing show that tries too hard to be "geeky" while simultaneously mocking and belittling geeks, whereas Community understands that the best way to appeal to its audience is to NOT make that audience feel like shit for having certain hobbies.

Re: Comparisons you don't get

(Anonymous) 2015-08-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hardly bashing, come on now.

Re: Comparisons you don't get

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It is bashing.

It's not entirely accurate to call it "geek bashing", because it bashes every kind of human being equally, but it does coincidentally bash geeks.

If they weren't airing at the same time, and didn't make such an obvious comparison in terms of both style and popularity, they probably wouldn't have been compared to start with.

I don't find either one the least bit funny....

LOTR and ASOIAF. Because ASOIAF is much, much better compared with the Silmarillion. People compare it to LOTR and talk about ASOIAF and talk about Martin being so much darker and edgier and "realistic." And anyone who has read the Silmarillion can probably tell you how ridiculous that is.

Comparing Westeros to Middle Earth as a whole, sure. But just comparing it to LOTR specifically doesn't work very well.

Rivers of London series and Harry Potter. Even some of the official publicity materials uses the comparison, and it makes no sense. Yes they both involve magic, however that is as far as it goes.
