What do you want from queer fiction?

I want what I want from regular stories, except there's queer characters.

To feel like I'm reading about people who could exist. They have to be more than a bundle of tropes.

Less angst and preaching, more robots and space adventure.

Gays in space, without thirty-page filibusters about the evils of homophobia. Why isn't this a thing?

Yeah, I feel like people reading gays in space already know about the evils of homophobia. Why do authors feel the need to reiterate it?

More of it. Less stereotypes. More awesome bisexual characters (and by that I don't mean women who mostly date men but will have one fling with a woman in a way that is clearly meant to be there solely to turn on men).

Queers doing literally anything that isn't angsting about whatever brand of queerphobia applies to their situation. Give me queer vampire hunters, or space cowboys, or literally whatever you want to call it, just hold the ranting about how bad their lives would/used to be/are. I know how bad queer life can be, I want to see them do things that don't relate to that.

I took a class called Queer Fiction in uni. I don't know what I was expecting, except yes, fiction with queer characters and/or by queer authors. Something like that. But a lot of it was so bizarre and I kept wondering if it was me. Was I uncultured or heteronormative or something else?

It wasn't all bad. One book in particular was really moving and made me cry. We also learned about the history of the gay rights movement, not something that gets taught everywhere.

Queers. That feel like living, breathing people. Speculative fiction exploring societies with attitudes to gender / sex very different from ones we know.

On that last part...

Stories where the main plot isn't a romance. It can be a B-Plot or whatever, but can I get a goddamn action movie with a lesbian lead or some shit.

The same as the stories I normally enjoy, but with casually queer people in it. Maybe some romance then back to plot.

So like....post apocalyptic sci fi survivors with a lesbian lady lead will make me pretty content.

oh yeah and none of this angsting endlessly over their gender shit. or endless pages of doom and gloom about their gender. Or the usual kill your lesbians trope or whatever. Like, I don't want it to be the FOCUS of the story, I just want them to happen to be X or Y

More bisexuality instead of a super rigid "you're either 100% gay or 100% straight and those are the only options" mindset.

Same sex relationships that are treated the same as opposite sex ones.

More non-stereotypical queer characters, and characters who just happen to be gay or otherwise non-straight instead of their entire personality revolving around it.

A Bones/Castle/etc. type show where the leads are two guys or two girls, and they actually get together instead of the no homo-y fanservice we get with stuff like Sherlock.

Two different things:

Regular stories with people like me.

Utopian speculative fiction that imagines how the world might have been like without a Kraft-Ebing, Kinsey, Masters & Johnson, or Bailey.

Basically - what i already get, except with queer characters. Thank gods for fanfiction, especially when the queer is just *there*, and not some big 'thing'....

Re: What do you want from queer fiction?

What I essentially want is for it not to be queer fiction.

I want fiction - particularly fantasy and sci-fi, since that's where my heart lies - with queer leads whose sexuality is precisely as important to their characterization as that of the heterosexual leads in well-done mainstream fiction. I want a variety of character types, some heroic, some villainous, some in between. I want romantic B-plots where the hurdle to romance is something other than the characters' queerness - where it's their class differences, or their philosophical differences, or the fact that the knightly character doesn't really trust the mage's magic. I want the problems they face to be problems of plot, not homophobia. I want their acceptance or lack thereof to hinge on their personalities and their actions, not on their queerness.

+1 million

here's what I want: unrealistic gay stories

that's right, completely unrealistic fantasy gay stories. like disney princess movies for gay people is what I want. there's such a damn focus on hitting every angsty horrible "realistic" storyline in queer fiction that it's in no way a fun escape from reality.

boy, can't wait to read this gay love story where everyone's parents screams at them, someone is disowned, the one character starts doing drugs, everyone cheats on each other, and eventually one or the other dies– a real fun escape!

I want disney princess levels of escapism, where cartoons birds fucking sing and those two boys kiss and the story ends.

Better stories and plotting. Too much queer fiction is just resting on creating queer characters and have them be stereotypes. You got to do more, you got to have a story for them to be in too. Actually the end goal for me is to stop having queer fiction at all and just have fiction that routinely includes LGBT characters, who aren't defined by being LGBT, as a matter of course. But no asexuals though, those guys are creepy creepers.
